Lightest from the factory barrel possible. Good over all choice. If you are ordering right from the factory (either rifle or upper) then go for the 16" M4 barrel with NO muzzle brake. (same low weight - less side blast - more muzzle velocity)
2. A2 w/ AK Brake..(I can always change the stock)
Nix this - no need for a brake on an HBAR.
3. Plain old Shorty Carbine, and have the barrel cut and have a better Comp. attached?
You don't need a comp, nor is one particularly desirable, unless you want to have the 14.5" M4 barrel. With the release of the 16" M4 barrel barrel, there is no need for a POST-BAN 14.5" M4.
Whats the difference between the Mini Y comp and the AK brake? Are these pinned or welded?
Can they be changed by a gunsmith if welded?
The Mini-Y looks better (IMHO), and seems stronger. The AK brake does a better job of muzzle flip/recoil reduction. They are both pinned and welded. Generally Gunsmiths will have a very tough time removing them, though Kurt Wala does it often enough.
Best bet is to get the barrel you want directly from the factory. Or get an HBAR 16" and send it to Kurt to get turned down to a Lightweight (A1 profile) or M4 profile.
Does anyone make an really effective comp? I mean really superior to all others? Thanks
The AK is the best at recoil reduction. But it really isn't needed on a 5.56 rifle. If you want looks then Kurt's brake works well and looks similar to the military A2 style.
