I designed the LaRue 25 yard underground range / root cellar / storm shelter.
And now I'm building it. Pics to follow ... And I'll put up a drawing or two ... it's my gift to fellow shooters ... it's how we roll. 
M. LaRue ETA - It's cost-effective, and I'll show expenses as I go. 
A 40 foot Conex box will sit over and be welded to it ... dirt and another Conex will cover the 42" dia. pipe end. It allows shooting from a bench or off-hand to 25 yards. The gunited room will be 7 ft. wide x 7 foot tall x 40 foot long. Today's ballistic softwares allow you to sight-in at 25 and hit at 500.

You could make the Conex the reloading room, and have a spiral staircase to get down to the range below. Since the Conex box is welded to structures mounted in the concrete, it's one tough little shack. There will be a roof over it that extends to both sides ... for parking implements, vehicles under, and shading the Conex box and root cellar from most of the heat of the sun. One could a/c the Conex or build an apartment in it. And there's a way to camo the Conex so it doesn't look to the neighbors like you drug a Conex into the yard.

That's an awesome project Mark. I've been wanting to do something like this, what's your total projected costs looking like? Dunno yet. A Conex box is $3,500+ depending on if you get walk-through doors added. If I heard right, that 42" x 60 ft. galvanized pipe ran just over $2,000 ... The dirt work ?? The Gunite ?? |

I dont see a sump pump hole in the floor you not going to need? Why did you decided on galv. culvert? I agree Gunite is probably cheapest or may be foam blocks that you fill with concrete. But from pics looks like you or ready for gunite. I'm gonna have 'em slope the floor slightly to drop one into if ever needed, I doubt it will be. The galvanized is cost-effective, nearby, and 42" diameter is the right size for the project. And yup, ready for gunite. ML |

when I used to work in the LA area, I was doing some work in a parking lot & kept hearing a "ping" sound, comming from a smallish square vent type stack in the middle
of the parking lot. I figured out there was an underground range & that was a vent at the target end of the range for some bullet/ammo/gun mfgr. or other business in the area. This was in the late 80's, east of LA; didn't ever find out who owned that. |
