i was wondering where is a good starting point for ar15's. helpful links? forums? books?

For.. assembly? We have an assembly tutorial right here on ARFCOM.

As for books.. I purchased the Army technical manual for the M16A2, available at Bushmaster.com. (Second choice down on the following link - just ignore all the stuff about auto and burst sears and selectors)
