I don't know about mail order availability, but as of lately, I cannot find any cheap surplus blasting ammo locally. Especially .223. What's causing the shortage? Is it just this area? Or, perhaps ammo vendors following the lead of the major oil companies!?! Surry County seems to have gone "dry". If I'm going to do any shooting in the near future, I've gotta start stockpiling! I hate to pay a hazmat fee, and my local funshop appreciates my patronage.

Well as for Federal, per their product line manager for the 193 and 855 it's going away. It may be back somewhere down the line but for now it's being utilized by the mil for training. As for ordering on the net there isn't a hazmat fee for loaded ammo, just raw powder and primers.  Check out the Ammo forum for the current deals.

Thanks for the link. I guess I'm not going to be able to support my local gundealer with this purchase huh? He'd be disappointed with me... That's a good price, and I think I'll have to go that route. Can't beat the shipping either! I've never ordered loaded ammo before. It comes as a surprise to me that they didn't tack on a hazmat fee to it.

Not sure if you've heard about it, but there is thing going on called the "Global War on Terrorism"  Seems they need a lot of this ammo stuff.

I'm glad I could be of some help. I'm going to wait for the Charlotte show at the end of February to see what kind of deals they'll have. If I can't get some 62 grain for a decent price at the show, I'm going to get some from ammoman.com.
