Anyone hunt any of the walk in areas out on the North East part of the state? Just wondering if it's necessary to have a dog or if it's even worth going? Are there any rabbits or is it mostly birds?
Thanks for any info. Mark |
| For bird hunting (pheasants) the CDOW has tried to provide some properties to hunt. Unfortunately, they have failed to enroll enough quality properties with decent cover to make the hunting worthwhile. I say don't bother...most of the WIA blows. For other species, couldn't say. If you're hunting birds, go to Kansas....now, there is a wlak-in program!! |

I hunted pheasant last year with the WIA program and the habitat was phenomenal. Lots of CRP adjacent to crop fields such as corn. We saw lots of birds, rabbits, and antelope. Unfortunately, I didn't have a dog and guys with a dog would literally walk 30 yards into the same field I just walked and limit out! So, the birds were sticking real tight or running. It took very little effort to find decent fields, and worth $20 in my opinion. If only I had a dog. Granted some fields were just dirt clods and worthless, but look at the maps, the DOW did a good job of marking them. Did I mention that birds were sticking tight, i've never seen hunting like this, but don't be afraid to start into a field that guys are already half way down. Seriously, I would start a field, guys would come in behind me about half way and as i was working my way out the next field, more guys already started in the first field. We all jumped birds! The whole point of the program is that DOW will pay farmers to maintain habitat for the birds.
I have not been to Nebraska, so I can't comment but have friends that go every year and are very successful, not sure if the price of a license cost more than what you pay for WIA though. Happy Hunt'n |
