First, let me say that I have supported the NRA for years and will continue to do so.  I appreciate their lobbying for my gun rights.  However...

Is anyone else turned off by the antics / game playing by the NRA?  I'm talking about the propaganda crap that they send you to "trick" you into giving more money.  I see it as an insult.

For example, today I received my "Defender of Freedom" award that is "only bestowed on exceptional NRA members who have demonstrated outstanding leadership well above their peers."  I haven't done anything other than pay my yearly dues.  I have contacted some members of the legislature and our governor when open carry was at risk, but that is all, and they would not know about it.  Essentially, I do not like them blowing smoke up my butt.

Also, I've received a "personal" invitation to join the NRA Golden Eagles, because I was "singled out for the high honor of being a Defender of Freedom."  I've apparently "earned the right to be a Golden Eagle because of my proven leadership, activism, and advocacy."  What a bunch of crap.

I guess what I'm saying is I'd rather they just shoot straight with me and tell me why they need another $200 than try to b.s. me.

However, and sadly, these tactics must work or they wouldn't do it.  So, do they think we're a bunch of morons who are lining up to puff our chests out to get some award we didn't earn?

Yes. A recent thread in GD basically proves what you are asking. There are people here that believe a individual doesn't have the right to own firearms unless they are a member of he NRA.

I find it weird that I do not get much in the mail from the NRA. I also do not get phone calls from the NRA, about the only thing I get is my magazine every month. Even my wife who is a yearly member only gets one or two letters a year in the mail and its only when its time to renew again.

Same here. No phone calls but I do get mail about once a month. It was really bad years ago, phone calls on a weekly basis.

You do know you can request the NRA to not send you promo mail don't you?

Do you rant about any other junk mail you get in your post box?   I will never understand why people shit their paints when they get a request for more money from them but have no real issue tossing any other junk mail they get.

You missed my point.  They're my chosen organization to which I contribute.  I'm "ranting" about they way they communicate with me.  They're not just requesting money, that would be fine with me.  Rather, they're trying to manipulate it out of me.

I contribute to many other organizations, and it seems like the "circus factor" is much much less.

However, no, I did not know that I could request that they not send promo mail.  I will do that.  Thank you.

It's called marketing .   Do you really think that ford is "job 1" in real life or the idiot in charge of the country is really the most "transparent"?  Don't put to much into it.  Marketing is all about manipulation.  No one actually will say we suck buy our shit.

I understand what you are saying but you also need to determine if it was the NRA or NRAILA that sent it to you...  Big difference between them

Both the NRA and NRA-ILA rather have them both be honest. The NRA-ILA is the real lobbying arm of the NRA, I donate to them monthly. When the NRA starts the fear mongering to get donations they move into the level of Dudley Dickhead Brown and the NAGR.

Been a Life member since '68 currant a Benefactor. So I put my money where my mouth is. I wish the NRA would dump the idiots who do their marketing to the members, they don't help the cause.

A few years ago after a renewal they sent me some basic  training dvd.  I watched it and tossed it to the side.  Few months later they sent me a bill for the dvd.  I Called them up seriously pissed and told them if they pulled a stunt like that again I would just send all my NRA donations straight to Cruz and Cornhole.  They apologized and said I could keep the dvd for free.  I also hate the cheap Chinese shit they are constantly sending out.  I agree with their marketers needing to go.

I most likely got the same DVD you got.  If you would have looked at the "bill" a little closer you would have noticed that it said it was not a bill.  They were just looking for a "donation".   I hate this type of marketing.  Not because I was confused by it but because the average person is confused by it.  Most people simply don't read the "bills" they get.  I look at it the same the "checks" the car dealers send out.  There are a bunch of people that really think they have something.  Again it's just marketing and most people don't understand how easy it is to manipulate your target audience.

That's pretty much the point I got to about 5 years ago.

Most of the mailings are a fucking insult to my intelligence. It's almost as bad as the stuff politicians send after you give them a few bucks.

The good news is they eventually give up and stop sending you things. I kinda miss American Rifleman, but I've got plenty of other stuff to read on the shitter.

I support the NRA but I do not like the constant stream of solicitations. I have gotten to the point of discarding the mailings on sight without even opening them because they all contain that sheet. The sheet that asks for your credit card information.

Yeah that one is very strange.  All I can think of is you are already on a list to go out at a presorter.  I know when I did this type of work years ago we would tell people it would take up to 6 weeks for junk mail to stop.  The reason for this was that some info was already printed and ready to go out on a specific date.

This has been going on for years.  I think they just want to get money from people that don't remember when their membership is up.

I got that feeling years ago when they didn't put forth much effort or none at all in opposing FOPA  ( 86 NFA title 2 ban ) or transferable mg ban. Whatever you want to call it. If I remember correctly they even offered up black rifle owners as a sacrifice to appease the constitution hating socialists of the era.
That and the constant begging that bordered on harassment for more money led me to feel the same way.

If even half the people who owned guns were nra members or for that matter 10% we could write our own ticket.

Yet I have good friends that even when I give them memberships do not renew.

The mailings are not done by the NRA, a private mass mailing company has the contract for the NRA. Unfortunately the letters and the B.S. 'gifts' they send out for donations are just piss poor, more and more the letters sound like the stupidity that come out of NAGR.

One thing to think about is if half the gun owners were NRA members and donated an additional $100 a year to NRA-ILA, you would never hear the stupidity that comes out of anti-gunner's mouths.
