I'm starting up my new job and I get to take the CHL for free and I'm allowed to carry on the job.  However, I have one question, what is the shooting portion of the test?  I'm going to the range tomorrow to get accustomed to my CCW which I haven't had a chance to shoot yet.

dont think you can fail the shooting portion unless intentional.

using a good pistol that you are accustomed to is probably your best bet.

Yeah, the shooting part is the easiest.

But if your teacher was like mine than he will be loud and in your face!

But that is good b/c you WILL remember what he tells you!

Don't sweat the shooting test.

A blind 1 legged dog on crack can pass it.

I passed the shooting with flying colors. I'm the worst shot in Texas, can't hit the broad side of a barn... fullcip

I compare it to taking Defensive Driving with guns.  Impossible to fail.  Just put your time in.

My 63 year old mother in law passed it.  SCARES THE CRAP OUT OF ME!!

The Texas CHL is about learning the laws on where you can carry, when you can carry and when it is a legal time to pull your gun out and shoot.  It is not a class on shooting, as the qualification standard shows. If you want to learn to shoot a gun, go elsewhere. If you are strong enough to hold the gun out in front of you and pull the trigger, you can pass the shooting requirements. I honestly believe that a person that shoots pistols a lot, can pass the test with their eyes shut.

I've shot a 249 both times. I know I could pull of a 225 blindfolded.  Don't sweat the shoting portion, just take your time.

I don't know how it is possible to fail it but I hear stories all the time.
When I took the class there was some lady that failed 2 times then passed by 2 or 3 points.
It realy is kind of sad.
Just think how she will do under stress, in the dark or who knows what .

Why we are on the CHL topic, it's time for me to renew this year. If I remember correctly one can renew as early as 6 months before expiration. Correct?

The guy I used before, Trey Tenery, P.I., is no longer at the number I have.
I would be greatful for recommendations on who to use in the Mesquite/Forney area. Thanks.

Thanks, I don't know why I put 20?  I have the ranges marked on my pistol range.

Doh!

Piece of advice on the shooting test.  Stand on the far LEFT of the shooting line.  With 10-20 handguns all firing at once, the line gets pelted with hot brass.  Watch out for newbies/women that get hot brass down thier shirts.  They will freak and lose muzzle and trigger discipline.

TRG

Something about hot down their shirts...hhmmmmm

Good point however.

+1

I could have done much better on the range part of the test, but at Bullet Trap they normally get pissed if you do any rapid fire shooting. This was my one chance to do some rapid fire there and I wasn't going to miss it

I took my class this passed Sunday and it was way easier than I thought.  There was even this older lady in her late 60's who tried to shoot an old revolver, but it was broke somehow (I don't know the details) so she rented a glock 9mm and passed just fine.  Then she bought a glock from the gunshop that we were at.  The class was mostly boring and I wouldn't say that there were 'sales pitches', but there were many breaks for us all to go and fondle their inventory.

Guy next to me had a Jennings.  I didn't have to worry about any spent brass coming out of that thing!  lol!    I really felt kind of sorry for him...  just a little.

Thanks ya'll, as far as brass coming at me, we'll be in an indoor range with partitions so I won't have to worry about that.

I dare you to do a ghetto hold when you are at 3 yards.  Remember to 'thrust' the pistol at the target to make the bullets go faster.

Use the phrases "Yeah, dog!" "Take That!" "Get some!"

That's an awesome idea.

I believe my CHL instructor would have pistol whipped me if I'd done that.

eh it's better than working at Academy.  Too much corporate bull shit to put up with and this way I get to focus on firearms instead of having to mess with other shit all day long.

DVDTracker: I must admit it, you are better than I am
Guy next to him: Then why are you smiling?
DVD: Because I know something you don't know.
Guy: And what is that?

Wow small world, I love going to Champions, I just don't anymore because I'm broke. If I had somewher eto keep my pistols up here it might be a different story, but living on campus and having my handguns is a no no.

Just kidding
