It has been a few years but it's time to fire up my MIG welder and get some practice... then eventually get some fabrication projects done.

Can anyone suggest a good source for "inexpensive" steel sheet, bar, rod and pipe near the Danbury area?  Or maybe someone here has a bunch of decent pieces hanging around?

Ideally I'm looking for drops from 1/8-3/16", nothing galvanized.  Not looking to buy junkyard scrap to spend hours cutting out usable pieces and stripping rust.

Have used Yarde Metals in the past... they're not local but they will deliver a decent sized order for free.  I've been checking their "drop zone" but nothing under 1/4" sheet has been on there in more than a month.

While not in the Danbury area we have everything you seek.
If you're ever in South Windsor stop by Atlas Metal Works, 860-280-1030, ask for Bob

Just wondering whether $1 per pound for small quantities of garden variety A36 structural steel is the "going rate".

That's what they charge in the "bargain bin" at Logan Steel in Meriden (yeah, it's not exactly Danbury area, but it's not out of the question to drive there). They probably discount that if you get 80 or 100 lbs.

$1 / lb is about right for new material, no more.
