The range in Ames is AWSOME if we could get it. Only thing is that they DON"T allow full-auto fire. I really don't know if they would allow non-members to shoot there however. They do for the IDPA shoots, but don't know about something like an AR shoot.

We could always have the shoot at Bays Branch. Open to the public and don't have to worry about any pissy member B.S. You bring it you shoot it.

Where's Bays Branch and give a description of what they have and are they usually very busy? Is it somewhere up around you? Let me know as we're going to get this all decided by the end of the weekend hopefully.
I'm at the store again Sniper so if you want give me a call again tonight and tell me about this range.

Range has 1,2,and300yd benches also a pistol and skeet area. We'd just have to get out their early and take over the place.

I'm game. I missed the last group shoot. Finding that range is not that hard, and there are no membership issues. If you can find Panora you can find that place.

I was at the last shoot there,ok by me.The only thing I did not like about the set-up there is that the 200yd and 300yd shooting is over the 100yd bench,all are in line with each other.So, only one bench can be used at a time.It's out in the boonies and not many farm houses nearby.Nice quiet place(untill we get therehippie.gif

So if only the one bench can be used at a time is there room for others to shoot standing or laying down on a mat or tarp? Is it a covered shooting area? I'm just worried that only one person could be shooting at a time and not room for others to spread out and have enough room, it's boring if you have to stand around and wait for the person in front to finish shooting so you can. Are you able to put out targets (bowling pins, cans, etc...) and is there enough room (range wide enough?) for people to shoot at the plinking targets at the same time? What is considered as early enough to get out there and take over the range? If some people happen to beat us out there would that mean that we wouldn't be able to shoot? Some people would be driving a little ways only to find out that we wouldn't be able to shoot as a group. What about camping overnight out there...any chance we could and would anyone want to if we're able? Would people want to meet somewhere before shooting to eat some breakfast...but I guess that depends on how early we need to be to the range. Those that have been to the range please chip in your .02 worth ASAP. Thanks guys!

The range would be 100 yds only for a group shoot. can bring whatever you want pleanty of room to spread out hell tarps tables can be brought if need be. I can just set up on the tailgate and walk out and shoot. Their are two benches side by side with 4 seats at the 100 yd line which could be used for the bench shooting others can stnd and plink. I've been to alot of shoots more BSing than shooting takes place anyway.
As said before I don't give a shit where we shoot aslong as it happens and were not supporting a club that doesn't want us nor support us.

Bays Branch Comming from the NORTH using 141 E. & W. Take Wood Rd. or P30 which is South of Jamaica South to 160th Rd. then going West to Utopia turning South on Utopia to 175th St then turning East on 175th St to Vote Ave which heads back South about 50-70 yards down on the East side is a road heading to the range.
Bays Branch from the South using Hwy 44 From the E & W East of Panora Is Utopia Rd Take this North To 175th St. Go East on 17th St to Vote Ave Turn South on Vote Ave which heads South about 50-70 yards down on the East side is a road heading to the range.  |

Hey guys,
I run the Outdoor Range the Ames Ikes. Todd has sent me a couple of emails about holding rifle matches or shoots or whatever you want to call them. For the last two years we have held CMP Service Rifle matches (Garand Matches). Though originally intended for M1's, 1903(A3)'s, M1-Carbines's, etc, we allow pretty much any rifle, in an effort to encourage participation in these matches. The course is shoot at 100 yards only, with 10 rounds standing off-hand, 10 rounds rapid fire sitting, 10 rounds rapid fire prone, and 20 rounds slow fire prone. Rapid fire strings are 80 seconds and slow fire is 1 minute per shot. We have also held IDPA matches for the past four years - I'm guessing you are familiar with that type of match. What kind of course of fire are you interested in? Todd was leaning toward an informal tactical course of fire. I was thinking about using IDPA targets with various points of cover and targets ranging from 10 to 100 yards or so, with movement up to 100 yards. We could run the whole thing for time - basically it would be an IDPA match for AR's. Any thoughts or suggestions. I am open to this, but need to know people will show up.
