Given the recent surge of group buys in here, I thought it would be good to post the rules regarding "Hometown Group Buys."
A Hometown Group Buy is a group buy intended primarily for members of our forum. It is a local affair, I think this is self explanatory.
We are permitted to have ONE group buy running in our forum at a time. This means you may have to be patient while waiting for one to wrap up. A group buy is "open" until the point that all product has been delivered to all participants.
In order to conduct a group buy, YOU MUST FIRST CONTACT EITHER ME OR HIRAMRANGER. You must provide us with all the details about the buy. We'll let you know what we want to know, just contact us. Do not even post a "gathering interest" thread without first contacting us. I will lock any of these threads I see that haven't first been cleared with us.
If, after reviewing the details of your proposed buy, I or Hiram feel that we are comfortable with everything and are willing to take on "oversight" responsibility for it, we will give you the green light. You must understand that local group buys are solely at the discretion of the relevant forums moderators. (these are different that general group buys that you want to run out of the EE, which still go through site staff) If we agree to let one run, we are also taking on some responsibility to ensure it progresses according to schedule and completes successfully.
If there are multiple requests in to do a group buy at once, we will use our discretion to determine who goes next. Obviously, first come first served is the best way to do this but some buys make progress to the point of "ready" before others so we will see.
I want to stress that a successful group buy requires thought, attention and a lot of personal focus on the part of the person running it. I have watched many buys crash and burn, with some folks hurt financially, simply because the people running them were not adequately prepared, organized or able to manage a project like this through to completion. Please think very hard about whether you are willing to accept the "hassle" involved with running one before reaching out to us.
I hope everyone takes this as a positive thing. We now have the ability to conduct local group buys out of our forum, which is great for all of us. However, one bad apple could ruin the whole thing so PLEASE abide by the rules...
Thanks,
Rob
