I know this has been discussed before, I think in GD, but is the  Winchester 1892 "Mare's Leg" legal in CA?

I've seen a few at "End of Trail" the SASS World meet when it was held in CA.  Nobody made a fuss about them.  But if they were illegal and shootable, the officers would have approached the person and suggest that it disappear quickly.  (IIRC Gunzilla had one, but it's been a bunch of years.  Gunzilla usually made it to EoT with some real interesting things.)

That said, if it was made in 1890s it might have been considered a relic and NOT a firearm.

Newly made, ie, saw your own stockl down, etc,  you would definitely run into overall length and barrel length issues.   You'd end up with a bullpup lever gun.   I'm pretty sure the CAS communtiy and SASS member communities were pretty consistent on it being illegal in a new gun.

Provided they are not cut-down rifles (i.e, legit. started as factory-built pistols) they're OK.

Obviously they're not Rostered.

I keep hearing rumors that DOJ staff has made a mistake of saying they're Roster-exempt;  somehow
these guys think "cowboy guns" are Roster-exempt, when what is really Roster-exempt per 12133PC
are dimensionally-compliant single-action revolvers and dimensionally-compliant single shot pistols.

The Mare's leg is neither.  Someone could prob. figure a way to import one as an exempt single-shot
pistol before it enters CA and do it that way, but I doubt that most of the SASS guys have the interest,
ambition or skill in these matters.
