PORTION OF CHICKAHOMINY WMA TO CLOSE FOR FILM PRODUCTION, IMPROVEMENTS
The Virginia Film Office and the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, along with numerous other public and private Virginia entities, are working together to assist the producers of a major motion picture that will be filmed in Virginia this summer. To facilitate this effort, the shooting range at Chickahominy Wildlife Management Area and the surrounding area will be temporarily closed beginning May 17, 2004 and lasting through the fall. Improvements to the area will take place during that time. These improvements will benefit future users of the site. Additionally, the positive economic impact of the production of this movie will benefit all the citizens of the Commonwealth.
This film has worldwide distribution and is the story of the first English colony in Virginia – which is particularly exciting in light of the upcoming 400th anniversary of the settlement at Jamestown.
Please note that the boat landing at Chickahominy WMA will remain open and boaters will still be able to use the road within the closed area to access the landing.
The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries operates shooting ranges at other locations throughout Virginia. Information can be found on the Department’s Web site at www.dgif.virginia.gov. Shooters may also find private ranges through sporting groups such as the Izaak Walton League and other local groups. A good method of locating shooting facilities is to simply search the Internet.
We apologize for any temporary inconvenience that this may create for users of Chickahominy Wildlife Management Area (WMA) and thank you for your patience, cooperation and support of this important opportunity for Virginia.
