I recently sent this email to some of mine.

Most every hunter has read Jim Zumbo's writings in the different hunting magazines.  In case you missed the fireworks online this week.  Jim Zumbo said this about the AR15 rifle:

I call them "assault" rifles, which may upset some people. Excuse me, maybe I'm a traditionalist, but I see no place for these weapons among our hunting fraternity. I'll go so far as to call them "terrorist" rifles. They tell me that some companies are producing assault rifles that are "tackdrivers."

Sorry, folks, in my humble opinion, these things have no place in hunting. We don't need to be lumped into the group of people who terrorize the world with them, which is an obvious concern. I've always been comfortable with the statement that hunters don't use assault rifles. We've always been proud of our "sporting firearms."

This really has me concerned. As hunters, we don't need the image of walking around the woods carrying one of these weapons. To most of the public, an assault rifle is a terrifying thing. Let's divorce ourselves from them. I say game departments should ban them from the praries and woods.

The gun community answered and Zumbo, who has had a long career as a hunting writer and magazine editor, has found himself dropped by all of his sponsors and his TV show has been cancelled.  He has been fired.

He made 2 apologies.  The first was just damage control, because he was feeling the heat from his sponsors.  The second is from a fellow who obviously realizes that he has messed in the frying pan.

The first apology is in the above link.

Second apology:

As gunowners, we are in the minority and face an uphill battle to keep our guns.  It doesn't matter whether you shoot an AR15 or a Remington 700.  Keep in mind that the Second Amendment wasn't written to protect hunting.  It was written to allow US citizens to maintain the ability to protect themselves from a tyrannus government.  There is a new Assault Weapons Ban bill in the US House of Representatives right now.  It expands on the Clinton ban that sunset in 2004.
http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c110:H.R.1022:
It includes the following verbage:

(L) A semiautomatic rifle or shotgun originally designed for military or law enforcement use, or a firearm based on the design of such a firearm(a), that is not particularly suitable for sporting purposes, as determined by the Attorney General. In making the determination, there shall be a rebuttable presumption that a firearm(b) procured for use by the United States military or any Federal law enforcement agency is not particularly suitable for sporting purposes, and a firearm shall not be determined to be particularly suitable for sporting purposes solely because the firearm is suitable for use in a sporting event.'.

Since the verbage in red(a) doesn't say, semiautomatic, this leaves the door open for some future US Attorney General to decide that a bolt action rifle with a Mauser type receiver isn't suitable as a sporting arm, since the Mauser was originally designed as a military weapon.  The Benelli M1 Super 90, autoloader shotgun, the one seen in many duck blinds, is used by the US military.  The verbage in red(b) could be defined as a Colt 1911 pistol, a Remington 700 bolt rifle, a Winchester 70 bolt rifle, a Remington 870 shotgun or a Mossberg 500 pump shotgun.  These are all used by the US military.  Other federal law enforcement agencies use all different types of pistols, such as Glock, Sig, Ruger, Springfield, Smith & Wesson, Kimber, H&K, Colt and others.  None of our guns are safe.

Shall ban:
(H) A semiautomatic shotgun that has--

`(i) a folding or telescoping stock;

`(ii) a pistol grip;

`(iii) the ability to accept a detachable magazine; or

`(iv) a fixed magazine capacity of more than 5 rounds.

Have you seen the latest Field & Stream?  Turkey hunters will be in the woods this Spring with autoloading shotguns with pistol grips and telescoping stocks.

It's not just about those evil black rifles.  Its all firearms they want to ban.
