Besides being cheaper without the embossed letters, my guess is the cameras will be able to snap a cleaner image of the letters.

I was wondering that myself as well. The strange thing is that I bought a new truck in March. There were already lots of the new style plates on the streets but I got one of the old embossed ones.

I noticed a lot of states are going to this. My assumption is that its just cheaper to print them on them stamp them.
