The residency thing is for handguns. I have never been asked to prove residency to purchase a rifle, but it happens each time I purchase a handgun.

Well, Southern California Gun (San Diego and La Mesa) interprets the law as requiring proof of residence for all firearms.  I had to provide it for a rifle I bought in May.  I used my vehicle registration.

I just bought a Windrunner at the last Del Mar show and didn't need it.  But then again, I know the dealer.

CAlifornia residency requirement
Commencing January 1, 2003 no firearms dealer may deliver a handgun unless the intended recipient presents satsifactory documentation indicating that he or she is a california resident. blahblahblah..
penal code 12071(b)(8)

Get a copy printout of the current firearms laws..
its only for handguns..
I helped point out this fact to a dealer who wouldn't release a longarm to me in the first place without proof.
Just to be sure, i also called the DOJ firearms division, and a lady there clearly confirmed its only for handguns. Have your dealer call if he doesnt believe you.

I am forever grateful to the dealer that i worked with because they got me a gift membership in the NRA...
