My daughter is moving to the city in a few weeks. She got an apartment with a grad student frind at 159th & St, Nicholas. hse has two other friends with apartments in the same bulding, all 20-something women, employed or grad students.

I'ver lived and worked in Manhatten, but not since the 90's. And even then I knew nothing about this area. Any info would be helpful.

I have heard about a lot of similar type people moving in there. Like western pioneers moving into indian country with their wagon train. IMO, they are all fucking crazy! That area is shit (or was - and I can't imagine it improving that much to be habitable).

What's the NYPD Precinct there? I'm sure you can look up crime stats.

Lotsa Dope, Lotsa crime.

Heavily Hispanic and a large center for wholesale drugs moving through the area.

Not yet gentrified with too many restaurants etc you would want to eat at.

No taxis at night, only illegal gypsy cabs.

Not desirable.

I had a friend do this a couple of years ago...I told her not to, but she did anyway...basically all she could afford on her student budget. She finally moved out this year. It got so bad that she purposely gained 20 pounds in hopes that the Hispanic males would stop harassing her as she came and went from her apartment. It didn't work.

Get her some NYC legal pepper spray. I can't overemphasize how much of a terrible idea this is...basically the poorer yuppie hipsters thought it would be quaint and cheap to move into a ghetto, and not only do the real residents resent them, but they look at them like prey. The students quickly got sucked in by the low prices, but the neighborhoods plain suck.

Well, you've all confirmed my initial thoughts.

Except, of course, for the Wiki entry which says all the drug traffic has moved elsewhere and it's the fourth safest area in NYC and a veritable garden neighborhood of peace and prosperity.

One more thing for a father to worry about.

I will try to get her in the right mindset and let her know she can call to move anytime she wants.

Like red meat in a tiger cage. Not a good idea.

Police stats are BS. Many crimes go unreported in that no snitch zone. I'm Puerto Rican and would not live in that hell hole. She be better off living in a 300 sq foot closet in a better area.

Actually it's the 33rd Pct.

many, many hospital employees and students on that block. No where near as bad it was before the late 90's...

I know someone who owns several rental buildings in that area, commercial and residential.

Not just Bloomberg, been going on for decades. Crime has still dropped enormously over the last 20 years in NYC. I was one of the drones taking the crime reports for 18+ years.
