Some time ago, we talked about getting together and doing some 80%'ers.  Anyone still up for that?   I remember someone had access to a mill to use, but if not, I have a drill press we could work with.

I have a couple 80%'ers to do.  First time I will be doing them myself...

Edit - 12/29/12:

We have started a conversation concerning a possible group buy on some lowers.  Since we do not have a specific dealer for the lowers yet, we will hold the conversation on Google Groups for the group buy.  If you want to be part of that, go to https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!forum/utahhtf.  Groups require us to accept to join in, so include your username so we know you are from here...

Yes, I have a jig and instructions plus drawings.

If you did some 20%'ers, the 80's will be easy to you!

I've read the instructions twice today, but am going to keep doing it over and over until I have it memorized...

I want to make sure I do them right, so I am sure the first one will take me all day!  I am making them as family pieces so I want them to be top notch (can't make crap for my son to see years down the road...      )

I had been waiting on Tactical Machining for 6 months to have some in stock, but never saw any.  Found these on AR15Plus.com .   I've seen some iffy reviews from them in the past, but a friend in Texas that I trust said their quality has gone up considerably in the last couple of years.  They had them in stock, so I took the chance.  I am actually really happy with them.   I was looking at Vader's website also and thought about talking to him after the first of the year.

The anodizing sounds good.  I have three and want to do a couple of more also when I get them.  If a couple of others step in, making 10 would not be too bad.  I knew Williams & Sons about the engraving, but didn't know if they can do specialized designs also.  I've got a friend at McGee's Trophy in Midvale that can do it also.  I want the snake on a couple, but want a square/compass done also along with the Shrine.

I would like to do this if someone could teach me. I have no idea how to do it.

It may be a couple of months before I get it set up, but I have a Bridgeport mill with a DRO.

I also have some blank castings that need to be lightened up a bit.

I'm definately interested in getting involved.

Which jig do you have?

I bought their 3 lower + jig + bits set.

That would be great!  I am going to be looking for more casts, so it will probably take that long to find and get them here.  I might try one of mine with the press, but that will be just to test and see how well it works on a drill press.

That is no problem!  I've been looking at them for years, but just kept buying other stripped lowers instead.  Now I'm finally getting around to actually doing them!

I've got 2 Tactical Machining jigs, one for an AR15, and one for an AR10.

I also have a quentin laser 80% that needs to be done.  Party time!

Where did you order the lowers from?  I've got contact info for a place in N. SL that will do the anodizing for $4.95 each if we do 10 at a time.  Williams and Sons in West Jordan can do custom engraving for selector markings and customized serial numbers.  I'm going to get a square and compasses laser engraved on one of mine.

I would love to learn about this. I have no experience in anything machining related, but I love to learn new things. Where can you get a forging anyways? How much do they run?

I ended up with a billet Quentin Laser last year, looks like they cost a Benjamin, and are backordered.

Besides the link Kevin posted, you can check the links above that Dan posted also.  I have a feeling they are all going to be on backorder though.

I think if everyone works on getting their 80's, we could have a pretty good time working on them.  Between all of us, we have a mill plus a few drill presses - we could be able to rotate around machines and have a good time at it.  I will volunteer my house and workshop for the location if the mill is able to be moved (don't know the size)...

Maybe start planning something for March or April?  Give everyone enough time to try and find some lowers?  Maybe even check with how many we can get and do some group by on them?

Sounds like we have a pretty good group to have a 80% Party!   There are 9 in this thread interested, plus I have a friend that wants in also, so we're up to 10...

Let's think about something for March or April.   I say we get some numbers and see if we can get a large order of 80's together.  I already have some, but am going to get a couple more also.

Maybe we could backordered the 10 for $900 if there is enough interest.

Ok, well I created a Google group for that purpose. UtahHTF Group buy.
