Hi guys - I live in DuPage Co. and am looking for a good local AR gunsmith (not some hack who "can figure it out"). I tinker with the easy stuff, but I need a barrel threaded, and some other things done which I would like a qualified AR smith to do for me. I don't mind driving a ways if I can find someone who is good. I'm just tired of mailing stuff back and forth and doing business by phone and email. If you know someone who specializes in ARs, please send me or post his name and phone. Thanks for any help. |
| Good luck. I know a smith who works on AR's but his lathe is broke so no threading. I had to send mine out to ADCO. I had my receiver back in 8 days from the time I sent it out. Steve does good work. I can understand the mailing pain in the ass but that actually might be faster than going to a local smith with a month backlog. |

I think his name is Scott who works at D&J Guns in Lakemoor. He is only there 1 or 2 days a week for limited hours. Does his work at WI. D&J 815 363-9541. Edit 1: per my previous post his lathe is broke so he can't thread a barrel. Situation might have changed might not. Edit 2: Steve @ ADCO in Ohio does great work and he has a ton of stuff that he sells. His reputation on the AR side is great as well. Not to knock Scott but if he has to order parts it's going to take time plus he is always backlogged. Faster in my opinion to ship it off to ADCO. |
| Thanks! I'll look into D&J. It's surprising there aren't more AR mechanics around especially with all the ARs being manufactured in Illinois. Do all the LE departments have their own armorers? I can't imagine they're mailing weapons back and forth to Colt and Bushmaster for work. Anybody else know of a good smith in N. Illinois? |

Give Rich of Canyon Creek a call. Here is his web site to retrieve his phone number. Canyon Creek Custom He does great work and is very resonable. |

www.moshergunshop.com They are in Dekalb, IL and their gunsmith Brandon knows his stuff. He has helped me with several AR items and also is extremely talented with FAL's and AK's- builds them up quite nicely. Give them a call and tell them Sven recommended them to you. |
BIG +1 for www.moshergunshop.com ! I have done business with Brandon, always a pleasure! (Not that way either! )

We are all AR mechanics. You don't need a specialist to thread a barrel. Any gunsmith with a lathe can do that. What other things are you tinkering with?? Plus one for ADCO in Ohio. JR |
I was at the Gun Doctor in November and at that time he did not do barrel threading. |
