I just had an interview there yesterday and might be moving (if I get the job).
I checked out The Gun Shop and Machine Gun Kelly's. I rented the MP5 at TGS and those guys are exactly how you guys describe them... LOL. the big guy followed me with the MP5 all the way to the range, sets up my target, load in the magazine and i let er rip... once the mag is empty, he loads in the other mag (why can't i do it myself?). anyway, once done shooting the MP5, i talk to the guy with like 4 handguns on him. wtf? does he really need to carry all these? LOL.

anyway, i REALLY hope i get an offer. looking forward to moving there...

also, if i move there, are there any "cheap" apartments or houses for rent in or around the summerlin area?

Iam sorry about your experience at the gun store. I hear a lot of the same but I would like to try and explain why we do what we do.  First of all we get hundreds touists a day through the door. You must remember that 99% of these people have never had a weapon in their hand before let alone a full auto. All you had to do is look up at the ceiling and see the holes. We have to be ultra careful to prevent anyone getting hurt. If your range master knew that you had experience I am sure he would have been more accommodating to your needs. Believe me I have never had more guns pointed at me since I retired from the Police Department and started working at gun shops. As far as the boys packing alot of heat. That is their option. We have about 18 machine guns in the store on display along with over 200 other weapons. I am sure the local bad guys would love to get some of that firepower.  Security is tight. There was a case here in town a few years ago where a  group of bad guys took over a local pawn shop and held hostages. These same guys had come into our store prior to the robbery but decided not to hit us because all the employees were armed to the teeth. It may look like it is over the top a bit, but I feel a bit better going out the door at closing time. Also you must remember that everyone that walks through the door is a weapons expert. I couldn't tell you how many times guys have told me that the Thompson was broke because the bolt would not go forward to chamber at round. And I get this from a 30 yr old who did two tours in Nam. and that his Tommy gun fired from a closed bolt. So Please guys you must Remember that when you walk through the door the poor Range Master has just taken out about 50 people before you that don't know a muzzle from a butt stock.

Went to Las Vegas and the Gun Store rented the MP5 fired about 4 mags videotaped and took pics just to show my girlfriend and her crappy friends in Brasil what a free country is like. I hadda target of OBL up there and shot it upside down when he turned it over his head was gone. Would you leave someone you never met before alone with a machine gun? I am sure if they know you the level of big brother will diminish...

Well; now this IS a revelation.
IIRC, TonyDee and Bob Irwin are the CCW instructors over at TGS, and well qualified to be so; IIRC. The store IS a tight ship; and the crew reflects it. Tony's teaching and writing style are both simple, straightforward, and enjoyable; honesty throughout. That his apparently rare posting here is in "defense" of their methods reflects his awareness of community amongst us; I only wish he (and his experience) were more accessible.
I usually avoid that place despite it's proximity; too busy......but I'll always listen to what one of them has to say. Being on "that" side of the business has it's unique responsibilities, and their methods are fine with me!

i'm not saying it was a bad experience (except being treated like a newbie at the lane). it was pretty interesting. when/if i move there, i'm definitely taking your guys' CCW class. the guy with a few holstered pistols was really nice and told me a few things about living there. the ccw class seems reasonable as well. so, see you guys soon (hopefully)!

i don't remember EVER seeing anyone in a gun store in the PRK packing so i understand it can be a bit of a shock to see somone packing 4 guns (that you could see) but... one or two is normal for anyone behind the counter here in NV.

15 & Cheyenne should be a fairly easy commute from most places in the valley... just make sure you are not moving into a "combat zone".

You never know who is a danger on the range. I worked as a ranger master in flordia, we rented a
smith revolver to a lady, Checked her out and the minute we turned our back she put the gun to her head and killed herself. This is the worst feeling you can have, you think to your self what
should I have done to prevent this? I guess treat every new person as a possible danger, to themself or others until you know them. As for packing on the job can't be too carful there either. SAFTEY FIRST

the gun store on trop is a first rate establishment if you ask me....Tony is a gem....and i even like the rest of the surly crew there....

Bob Irwin taught me my CCW class, and i have nothing but respect for his knowledge and wisdom.  It is true that it has become a tourist destination over the years, but aside from that, it is still a nice establishment in my book.

And i will never fault anyone for making safety a priority.  

I have done a lot of business at the gun store, and i will continue to do so.

Cheyenne and MLK has a few apartments for rent.  I drove there this past week for a client and it's not that bad of an area.  If you continue north on MLK past Cheyenne you will hit Aliante, a new masterplanned community.  You should be able to find some apartments there as well.  The cool thing about living around MLK is that it's a good "backroad" instead of taking the often times congested I-15 south to get to the strip or the middle of Vegas.

Aside from the crowds, I like The Gun Store, I've never had a problem with anyone there.  Bob Irwin was my CCW instructor as well.  He's a real straight shooter and very knowledgeable.  Plus you think that guy carrying 4 visible guns was nuts?  During class Bob showed us all of the hidden pieces he had under his shirt and pocket, you would never have noticed.

Yeah; I think he gets a kick doin' that. Tony, too. Interesting; their small-caliber preferences....

I just drove down Cheyenne yesterday. There's another complex on Cheyenne and Clayton, just north of the NLV airport.

Areas to avoid would be MLK between Lake Mead and Carey; and a few miles to the west of that.

I had a buddy of mine just move out here from Cali and went thru the same process of trying to find a place to live.  To quote him "im staying in the south west."  his girls family lives over by the MLK and he said they got their home broken into recently.  Not that crime doesnt occur anywhere else.  use caution when deciding where to live.  oh one more thing, if shopping during the daylight hours remember....its a whole different story when the night rolls in.  btw he got a 2bedroom in a gated complex with carport, 3 swimming pools, for i think ~800mo they gave him a 500 wally wolrd gift cert for moving in.  good luck in your search.

I used to work at the Nevada Pistol Academy on Blue Diamond.  We had a rule, one rangemaster per three handgun shooters, one rangemaster per SMG.  We gave basic stance, grip, sight picture, sight alignment, trigger control instructions, and how to load and safely operate the weapon.  Then we stood back and watched.  If they were handling it properly, we let people enjoy themselves.  If we saw a muzzle start to swing the wrong way, unsafe handling, etc., then we stepped in.  I think we were just as safe but shooters had more fun.

I have mixed opinions on the uniforms we wore.

Well, I got some good news and bad news. First is the bad news...
I won't be moving to Vegas afterall. Their offer just wasn't as good as the "good news"

The good news: I will be getting paid more and will move to CO. It isn't quite as diverse as LV, but it's only for a couple of years. I still might move to NV, but that won't be for a while.

well, i just found out some potentially bad news about the job i was supposed to take in pueblo, co... it looks like i might be moving here after all!

to make a long story short, i am working as an "engineer" for the pueblo chemical depot. we are going to destroy/neutralize the chemical weapons stored in pueblo. well, the gov. decided to take away the budget for the Pueblo Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant as well as Blue Grass Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant for the 2005 and 2006 years (about 300 million combined) and put it elsewhere. see more info here: Link to article.
