Think there will be mud these two weekends ???

Dang!

Thanksgiving is a HUGE hunting weekend for me.  Need meat for the freezer!  Then December, I'm hunting too, 12/27 thru New Years..... Looks like I'll have to wait till April to get back out there

Hope y'all have a good time!

Luckily, I only have to drive 45min to get to my blind, so I can be back in time for lunch. Did I mention it's a freebie ? OK, so there's hardly any deer, but it's the experience that counts.

In the "it's not what you know - it's who you know department": I happen to buddy up to one of our Director/VP type guys who happens to be a huge hunter. Has a honey of a deal just out of Austin in Dripping Springs. He's buddies with this multi-millionaire who wants him to just "shoot as many deer as you want" on his 1000 acres. On the very last day of the season last year, I had 3 deer and 4 turkeys in my riflescope's field of view at 7x. I love freebies. I've got a few trips scheduled out that way again this year.

Oh yes - the Hun farm. It's a hell of a drive from Austin, and ETH probably doesn't remember me, but the simple fact that I took a big picture of him without succumbing to the Photoshopping urge should buy me an invite.

Sorry this took so long, but here are the pics of my exclusive 3 days/2 nights loners Thanksgiving sojourn at The Hun Farm.

..."Our flag's unfurled to every breeze, from dawn to setting sun"...

The cabin and my 300 horse wagon.

The Pease River, looking WNW from the back of the cabin.

The "Long Range" field, looking WSW from the back of the cabin.

View from the swing, looking NNE over the Pease River towards Copper Breaks State Park, campfire ready for a single match.

Deluxe accomodations for one.

Preparing the first evenings supper, beef fajitas cooked over mesquite.  Sparsky, thanks for donating the grill!

Spyderco Clipit Rescue, EAA Witness .45ACP.

Too bad ya'll can't hear the coyotes and see the stars...Damn thing was so hot, I almost had to abandon the swing!  The flames are about 7 feet tall.

Thanksgiving morning.  Large flock of turkey in the "Long Range" field, about 400m from the cabin.

Same flock.  I guess there were 80-100 birds but I could only get 50 or so in the open at the same time.  If you look real close to the right side of the pic, about 320m down range, in front of and to the right of the flock, is my bowling pin target at the foot of a bare patch in the winter wheat.

I determined where I could photo ambush them from and moved into position.  They came within 50 yards.

Talk  about channelization....

Thanksgiving dinner.  I prepared this Tuesday before I left Austin.  South African Pat. 83 LBV, Armalite M15A4 with ARMS #38-EX, BM flip-up front site, Reflex II 12.5MOA triangle on a ARMS #15 QD mount, and of course my KA-BAR.

Entertainment on Thanksgiving night.

Day after Thanksgiving.  On my way back from Copper Breaks SP, and successfully completing my mission of the 3 S's, I stopped by the Historical Marker on Highway 6.  I returned to Austin later in the evening.

I've seen flocks of about 25-30 almost every time I have been there.  There were at least 80 and probably close to 100 in this flock.  I just couldn't get them all to stand still for a group shot...errr ummmm photo.  Yeah, that's it PHOTO!

Thank YOU, ETH!!

Yes indeed, being out there alone is a very unique experience.  I didn't utter a single word for about 50 hours until Ricky came looking for a few cows, and I spoke with him for about 2 minutes Thanksgiving morning.  Thanksgiving evening I noticed my reflection in the glass on the door, and I was smiling for a reason unknown even to myself...In retrospect, I believe that smile was because I didn't have a care in the world and I knew that Jesus Christ our Lord was with me.

It's not that you need to be overly concerned about the critters or even two legged varmits (there were numerous deer hunters on ATV's down in the Pease River), but things like catching yourself on fire while warming you backside or having the chainsaw kickback do cause one to pause for a few moments.  I can easily understand what attracted the Moutain Men to the West...

Absolutely true!  Originaly, I was going to bring my son and my best friend with me.  My best friends mom and step dad came to town on short notice, and my kid came home from school the day before we were to travel and informed me that he had a school project due on the 1st that he had been sitting on for over a week!  I hustled over to the Office Max and got his supplies, chewed his ass real good, and let him know that project had better be squared away and ready for inspection when I came back.  It was...

Yeah Mojo!  I'd like to be able to take credit for being the "Great White Hunter" and stalking within striking distance of my wary pray..... but I was damn near trompled to death by the stampeading flock of turkeys on what appears to be their daily after breakfast routine.  I had seen them the day before in that area, so I was pretty sure they would be headed in that general direction.  I could EASILY get within 5 yards now that I know exactly where they are going.
