Anyone know some public land that has hogs on it. I'd prefer near Redlands/ Oconee NF or North East Ga.

TIA

I killed one close to Oconee River on hwy 15 in Greene county. This is in Redlands. My Honda 300 4x4 could barely drag it in first gear.

If anyone else is looking I saw several on the Watson Springs area at Redlands.

I know you said North East GA but, Fort Stewart has plenty of hogs. I got my first one there.

I have been wanting to make it out to redlands to see if I could bag one.  maybee after deer season dies out I take a drive down that way.

I am up for some hog hunting, just make sure it is ATV accessible, not dragging one of them monsters out under my own power, LOL

I'm not sure the .223 is the best round for a hog.  I have shot several through the heart with a 30.06 and 7mm mag through the heart and the sobs still would run 50+ yards....and its an animal that can hurt you real bad   maybe a .50 beowulf or something

I would love to get out there and bust a few hogs with the ARFcom guys.

I would be up for a pig shoot. I have been trying to find a public place where I could go.

As far as the caliber. There is a video of a guy online taking a big hog down with one shot from a gamo air rifle. I will see if I can find it later. Its all about shot placement.

I haven't shot one either, thats why I'm trying to hunt with people that have.

shooting them is the easy part.  it's finding them that would be the hard part.. land where it is legal to hunt them is the biggest obstical.

Well if we wait till after deer season we can hunt at Redlands. Only thing is after deer season we have to use small game weapons. Also we can't use 4 wheelers on Redlands.

I'll be happy to shoot it if you guys will drag it out

Same here, never shot one and friends want me to get hunting license so i can hunt with them, an arfcom hog hunt sounds pretty cool to me

eta: i have access to 3 4-wheelers so i dont think draggin it would be a problem

Only one hog kill for me. But my Marlin Guide Gun is my preferred choice. A good heavy round for them. A guy I worked with a few years back, bounced a .300 WinMag off ones head. The angle was just enough that the round ricochet off the front of the skull.

The reason for only one kill? GAWDAMSTINKINESTANIMALONEARTH!!!

Ever nick a deers bowels? This is worse!  Good sausage though...

After reading my GON today it looks like going up to the mountains would be a better idea for hogs. On the other hand, what I saw at Redlands makes me think different.

+1   (60g vmax behind the ear = scrambled brains and drop like a bag of dirt)

This one was in Fannin county on edge of Cohutta wilderness, where we get them coming down from the mountains mostly in the winter rooting in the valley bottoms.  destructive bastards.

I can tell you from experience with all calibers that I have been more successful with a .223 in an AR than any other round including the .50 Beowulf. Shot placement is key. Hogs don't sit still long and you usually only have time for one shot with the big bore guns. They are constantly moving. I've got access to property 20 minutes from my house. Its normal for us to walk into the swamp and kill 5 in two hours. We've killed as many as 10 in a night with lights, lasers, and NODS.I used to carry the Beowulf or a 45-70 lever gun. Recoil is horrendous and follow up shots are next to impossible. I've hit many in the vitals with both big bores and they ran as far as 200 yards into the thicket and became unretrievable. I started carrying my 10.5" AR loaded with 64gr. Winchester Power Point soft points and going for head shots. Recoil made it possible to just keep the dot of the Eotech on them until they went down. Semi auto and large magazine capacity is key. A good solid head shot near the ear would drop them DRT. But if I missed I just made two or three quick follow up shots and again.....DRT. The .223 in the AR platform with a 30 round mag and proper bullet selection is way more than a viable weapon to take out them piggies. I have killed them with a .17HMR shot behind the ear and DRT. DRT in case you are wondering is Dead Right There. I have never had one charge me after being shot. Usually only after I walk up on them wallering in a mudhole......I have had them run towards me. Their scent capability is awesome. Unless the wind is in your favor will you ever get that close to them.

Well stated  00Bullitt.  +1 on head shot behind the ear.  you can see the point of impact in the pic below- high and behind the ear = boom, thud.  needless to say no exit wound....

One reason i was confident with the AR during the hog wars of last winter was 00's previuos posts on his Sweetwater basin hog massacres.  I knew i had 19 more behing the one that dropped it and recoil was miniscule on the big heavy Bushmaster Varminteer.  He was on his way down before the NV recovered from the muzzle flash.  I knew where the bullet would hit at 100 yards as i was sitting confortably waiting for it with the AR's free float tube on a monopod.

Hogs' lungs and heart are further forward in their chest than deer- Take a perfect large bore shot for a deer and put it on a hog and you will be hitting behind where you need to and will watch them run off bleeding.

That really is a good looking hog there cohutt.

I can say that from the time I have spent at Blue Ridge WMA and a few places in middle Georgia, that there is no comparison in which has more hogs or at least more hog sign with middle Georgia being the winner.  On my best friend's farm there are places that look like the moon with all of the roots making craters eight to fifteen feet in diameter.

when looks like a good time to do this?

I've seen them on the Watson Springs area which is archery only, and I've seen them on the Skull Shoals area this year.

More in south ga vs mtns i'm sure.

Regardless, did those craters look like these?

can't really tell from pic but they went deeper than the nalgene bottle in a lot of places.

Did you ever get those hogs taken care of?

My question is what about disease? I've heard a lot from DNR people that there is some blood borne illness that hogs in GA carry.

My understanding is that you need to be carefull when field dressing just like deer. The meat has to be cooked completely to kill the disease

Disease is really a very small concern with even wild boars.  The hogs belly is basically impervious to most common diseases. Just think about what pigs on farm eat.

When the leftover crap from when ever is your main diet, you have to have an iron gut.

The two main diseases that you have to watch for in the wild pigs are primarily Trichinosis (sp?) and pseudo rabbis.  The trichinosis is something that you have to watch out for in all pork anyways.  There also has been some concern over chronic waste disease in hogs, like they are dealing with in the deer up north, but I have not heard about any reported cases anywhere in the country yet.

Alright guys, both GON and Georgia sportsman have articles about hunting hogs on public land.  I have GON and will read it this weekend while I am hunting down at azreal9mm's farm.  I will get together relevant information and see if we can come up with a hunt.
