Hello just doing the obligitory introduction. My name is Mike or Beowulf from Jefferson City and I own a Sign Business. So if any of you need anything please get in touch.
On to the good stuff! So far my arms closet is fairly empty. Mossberg 500 Tactical with Adjustable Butt Stock, pistol grip, rails, and side saddle. I call that my "Home Entertainment" gun. My carry piece is a Kimber 1911 Custom II with Tritium Nite Sites and trigger job to 3.5 lbs. Love it! Looking to build an all around AR15 in 5.56 thinking probably Carbine. It's use will be Fun and utility, but if I absolutely needed to use for Hunting or protection can be used in such manner. So any suggestions on where to begin with the build most welcome. I have a lot of searching and creeping to do in the forums too, so I wont try to ask a lot of redundant questions. I'm new to AR's so don't gig me to hard. I might ask a stupid question now and then, but its all in learning. So for the first question. Knowing the AR as much as I do, you can build it with multiple calibers using the same Lower, and changing uppers. Is it really that simple? Or is there more to do? Also if any of you have done this what calibers are you using? And is it possible to build a 7.62 or would it be more recommended if I wanted to use that, to move to the AK or AR10? Thanks guys and I hope to meet some of you! |

Welcome to the dark side.
As long as you stay with one of the calibers that fit in the AR-15 magwell (some have different magazines) you can basically put any upper on the same lower. There are some pretty powerful loads that use the standard lower, including the .50 Beowulf. The 300 Blackout (300 BLK) has about the same ballistics as the 7.62x39 or .30-30 and is pretty good for hunting deer out to 150 yards or so. It's also designed to be suppressed and use subsonic ammo. Many variants require a different bolt, but can use the same bolt carrier. All of this makes the regular old AR one of the most versitile weapon systems on the planet. Build, build, build. It's a lot of fun and you end up getting exactly wat you want, evenif you don't know what that is. And, you'll get a deep understanding of how the AR works. ETA: There ar lots of people here in MO that are happy to help and even more that are happy to give opinions. If you're around St. Louis you're more than welcome to drop in and shoot here. |
Hey Mike, good to see you stopped lurking and signed up. ![]() One of the big things for me is how they look, so I did lots of looking around (in person and online), to see what parts I prefer. I don't know if you care about that, but here's a link to some picture threads you can look through; http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_3_118/428250_Links_to_AR15_picture_threads.html |

Hey guys thanks for the welcome. And thanks for the information on the uppers. I was thinking I might want to build one lower and have a couple of different uppers to perform different tasks. Like a 556 and something a little more powerful for hunting with. First I gotta put a lower together, so I am researching them now.
