So far I'm liking the "fixed" version of vista. Finally it just works.

You paid the right price for it.

heh no shit.

I am going to build a new comp in the next couple of months. Wouldn't mind using a newer OS than XP. Thinking a 64bit system and some serious horsepower under the hood. Quad processors.

Is there any software out there besides database server apps that utilize the 64 bit architecture efficiently?

Microsoft has done a horrible job hosting 32 and 64 bit web apps side by side. We run and pay for two installs to get around the annoyances.

if you work with files over 4 gb you need 64bit. Ive been running 7 since Jan's
build 7000 release.
I think it's absolutely slick as snot.

Get an Intel Core i7 quad core cpu later on this year.  Some excellent budget versions are slated for release later this year.  If you're going 64 bit, Vista or 7.  I've heard that the last SP for Vista got 64 bit runnin' good.  I still use XP for all my PCs, but I don't need 64 bit either.  I used Vista for a year on my laptop, then switched it to XP.  Bought a new laptop last month and switched it over too.

I just built out a Core i7 system for about $1400-1500 if you're interested in the specs.  Should last 3-5 years with some minor upgrades along the way.

You are really only running the beta. You will have to wait a while for the real Windows 7.

I think that's pretty much an understood.

I threw in a spare hard drive and installed it lastnight.  So far I like it better than the vista 64 that I was running.

I have a friend who is running it and he basically said the same thing - it is vista but it works.  No TCP autotuning disable required.  Now, if they just had a check box for "Make it look like Windows 2000 Professional" I might be interested.

Loaded it today.  Pretty nice.  Little things...like when I turn on my Bluetooth headset, it automatically recoginizes it, connects it, and makes it the default speakers.  So far, I'm impressed.  But then again, I'm the eternal optomist.

I don't mind Vista stuff.

Except for MS office. I NEED to have it in 2003 version
