So for those noobs among us, what can be expected at the February Practical Rifle match? At the January match they were talking about it being a “sniper” match. Is there any chance for those of us that use iron sights and 16” barrels?

No info yet.

The time is Feb. 11 @ 9:00am (arrive 7am for breakfast with some of us or by 8:30am to get signed up). If you aren't there for the walkthrough, you don't shoot.

The place is Tri-County Gun Club (TCGC) in Sherwood, OR

The fee is $5 higher for this one due to prizes ($20).

From the last PR e-mail:

Don't forget to prepare for the Annual Practical Rifle Sniper Match on Saturday, February 11th. Bring your most accurate rifle. We will shoot between 24-36 rounds. Match fee will be $20 to help with Trophy expense. We will shoot it the gravel pit where our normal matches are. If you have anything you would like to donate for prizes, please contact me.

I've got a feeling they're not going to tell us anything about the match until the walkthrough. "Surprise" is more like it.

Oh ya! I cant wait. Will be using my M1A with a 10x scope. This will be its first real outing, cant wait to see what it will do.

24-36 rounds? will a 1 moa or less .223 ar be sufficient?

I would not attempt this match unless you have a rifle with high end optics that can
consistently shoot 1 MOA. Try hitting a 10 inch target at 500 yards or the 10 ring on
sillouette at 600 yards. You need the proper equipment.

Also, remember several of the
PR group is experienced at this type of shooting. This match is not oriented toward the new shooter.

I placed 26th last year with a stock Colt Match Target H-bar with a 4X TA-31a ACOG. Irons? No way. I felt like I needed way more scope for those long shots.

Yep. And if they don't hit the paper, they do pushups. Here, if you don't hit the paper, you hit a house with a family inside

Doesn't Randy use those damn 8" flashers. Ugh. At 250 yards I was having problems hitting those with my AK.

My biggest problem with this match will not be "accuracy" per se. It'll be range estimation and bullet drop compensation. A .223 is typically flat shooting out to ~250 yards (assuming 50 yard zero). At 300, 4" low (with my loads). At 400, 18" low. At 500, 45" low. At 600, 88" low

That 400-600 range is really difficult.

This of course assuming no wind. You add a 5mph crosswind, and at 600 yards, you're off by almost 3 feet.

No poroblem. I'll be one place above you. Out to 300yards I can shoot. Beyond that...I've never attempted. I need my friggin' can on the rifle so I can practice with it.

Make myself a cheat sheet, practice range estimation, etc. etc.

Get a scope with a cam on it for your ammo, learn how to use your mils to estimate the range and fire for effect. Zero at 100, dial in your elevation after you estimate your range.

Doping the wind is the hardest. Whatever you do, do not resort to the kentucky windage, you'll never be able to hold a repeat with that method.

Damn, this sounds like fun, wish I was going to be there, but give the opportunity to go to Shot, next year will have to do for the sniper match.

And in the last match, you could only have 5 in the mag, and no reloads, you have to make each shot a good one...

Not at all. I know the Corps have exacting marksmanship standards. I seem to attract Jar Heads as friends... Not sure why...
