I'm getting ready to attempt to kill off a couple of hundred prairie dogs in a week and half or so and was wondering about ear pro.  This is my first time prairie dogging (this type anyhow) and the guys that I go with tell me some type of electronic muffs are pretty much mandatory so that you can comfortably talk amongst yourselves while shooting/spotting/mouthing/etc... One of the guys said that he has used some that were about $40 from Midway and they seemed to work fine, but he had a more expensive set that he normally uses.

Anybody have any suggestions?  I looked around to see if ARF had a subforum dedicated to safety equipment but couldn't find anything.  Any help would be appreciated.

I got a set from my LGS for $40.  Best investment I've made in a long time.  I love those things.

Howard Leight Impact Sport.

No matter which electronic muffs you get, they will likely run afoul of your rifle stock.  That said, I like my multiple sets of Peltors.

These are the ones I have. Great for pistol shooting. But as said, they tend to foul on rifle stocks.

These are a pretty good value in my experience. Good battery life, comfortable and light. You can plug your iPod in and listen to music if that's your thing.

They do get a bit awkward when shooting a rifle, but they are better than others that I've used.

mine are peltor and i like them.  i have been thinking of getting a 3rd set now since the ppl i usually go shooting with don't have ear pro.

I've had 2 pairs of the Peltors and didn't get a years worth of use out of either of them before they stopped working

I'll never buy another pair of them

I was expecting worse.  They look to be way higher speed/lower drag than the circa 1982 model that dad still uses and I've shot lots of rifles with them.

I'll try to look into the others mentioned as well.  $45 sounds like a pretty cheap investment.

I bought these earlier this year.  They work well for <$30.

But I'm sure the Leights are worth the extra $20

Buy once cry once

Sordins (I have a TCI headset that is the same external dimensions) play fine with rifle stocks.
Take your pick of what model you want below.  If you would ever want to upgrade to a communications setup go with TCI's DEHP, I prefer TCI's sound to the regular sordins but the sordins are way better than peltors offerings.  I use my TCI ones on a weekly if not daily basis with no issues. Also get gel ear seals for added comfort.

I've got roughly 12 sets of Caldwell electronic muffs at 25 each. And a set of Howard leight impact sports. The Howard's are worth the added cost. I've used peltors a ton and unless you are wearing them all day, I prefer the Howard leights.

if you are going to be wearing ear pro for hours on end, do yourself a favor and get the sordins. they are pricey, but well worth it. get the gel earcups.

I have been running the same pair (a lot) for going on three years, rain, sweat, snow, etc. dont phase them.

Forgot to ADD

AVOID the Peltor 6S at ALL COSTS! They are horrible and break freaking constantly.

Ive owned:
Peltor 6S's
Sordins Pro
Peltor Comtac II's
TCI Liberator II's (dual comms)

The Comtac II's were fine for hearing protections, however, I was using them with my radio, which caused some issues when the radio would key up. One speaker in each ear cup= no outside hearing when the radio keyed up.  Bad when your looking for murder suspects.  My TCI's have two speakers in each ear cup, one dedicated to the outside situational awareness and one to radio communications.

If you have any questions about those models I can help you out.

my peltor's are 6S's.  i have had them for over 3 years with only 1 issue (used for shooting, nascar races, and on a friends farm a couple of times) other than dead batteries when someone forgets to turn them off.  during a carbine class i left a set in the sun and heat inside my truck all day and the earseals warped on that pair (the factory's are foam btw).  i replaced them with gel ones that i think work better and feel better.  i usually use 1 pair and loan the 2nd out to whoever is with me.  maybe i just got 2 good pairs.  i also don't use them for duty but have used them in classes

I have a set of Comtacs that I have had for .... Lessee... 17 years, still going strong...
I have a Set of Behind the neck tac 7s... for a year longer... still going fine.

Two names to look at for Electronic Ear Pro....

Peltor and MSA/SORDIN...
Peltor is 3M now I believe.

I have a pair of Peltor 7s that are ~ 15 years old.  They finally stopped working 100% after getting thoroughly drowned in a carbine class.  My biggest complaint about them prior to that was the non replaceable foam mic covers rotting away.

Never heard of the Sordin's til this thread.

Thanks for the links guys.

I'm still old school with foam plugs and some ancient Safari Land muffs......

I started out with some $9 a piece ones from Harbor Freight, on sale. Worked OK but as I shot more and more noticed a lot of competition guy's shot Pro-Ear's. There was not so many to choose from years ago. I bought a used set of the Pro-Ears 33 Dimensions. Big, relatively heavy, and about the maximum protection you can get in an electronic. One of the neat things about Pro-Ears is you can buy replacement kits for the leather ear pieces, headband, mike foam and head band. I really like the leather ear part over a plastic ear piece. Later I got a newer generation smaller Pro-Ear rated at 24 or 26 NNR. Much lighter. I wear both pair shooting pistol, rifle and sg with no issues. I wear plugs under both if I am going to be around pistols and rifles with comps.

I want to say I have Pro Ears too.
However, I'd look for set that uses a standard size battery (AA, AAA, 9volt). My set uses a weird battery that just isn't that comon.

That was no little sprinkle either!!  Rain was stinging my face that day!!!  My Peltor 6s's worked for a year after that class, then the left side quit!!  Rt side still works!!!

I'll be rewarding my self with a pair of Sordin's after I get my third paycheck at whatever new gig I score.  I felt left out at the shoot on Saturday, having to read lips as opposed to hearing what folks were saying.

There is a birdcage on the front of a LAR-8 I shoot, but I don't know if you would even count that.  Nothing more than that.
