This may be a crazy question, and it may be wishful thinking, but here goes...
I will soon be getting my NYC rifle shotgun permit (even though I primarily live upstate, it is still fine for non-residents with rental apartments to get rifle shotgun permits). In my primary residence upstate, I have my Colt Match Target rifle. If I was to simply remove the pistol grip, and have only 5 round mags, that would no longer make it an "assault weapon" according to NYC administrative code. On the application instructions from the NYPD, it does list a number of banned weapons. The Colt AR-15 is listed, however not the Colt Match Target. I am pretty sure that just because it's not called an "AR-15" by name, it's still banned. But would removing the pistol grip and getting 5 round mags make it OK? I wonder what happens when you try to register one of these "banned" guns by mail anyway? Do they come to your apartment and knock down the door with a search warrant? Anyway, thanks for any help! |

Thanks for the reply.
Anyone have any other thoughts other than a one word answer? |

I have read NYC law top to bottom concerning their weapons laws already...that is what I was commenting on in my original post.
law.justia.com/newyork/codes/new-york-city-administrative-code-new/idx_adc0t10c3.html 10-301 gives definitions...(i pasted the definition below) 16. "Assault weapon." (a) Any semiautomatic centerfire or rimfire rifle or semiautomatic shotgun which has one or more of the following features: 1. folding or telescoping stock or no stock; 2. pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon; 3. bayonet mount; 4. flash suppressor or threaded barrel designed to accommodate a flash suppressor; 5. barrel shroud; 6. grenade launcher; or 7. modifications of such features, or other features, determined by rule of the commissioner to be particularly suitable for military and not sporting purposes. In addition, the commissioner shall, by rule, designate specific semiautomatic centerfire or rimfire rifles or semiautomatic shotguns, identified by make, model and/or manufacturer's name, as within the definition of assault weapon, if the commissioner determines that such weapons are particularly suitable for military and not sporting purposes. The commissioner shall inspect such specific designated semiautomatic centerfire or rimfire rifles or semiautomatic shotguns at least three times per year, and shall revise or update such designations as he or she deems appropriate. Now I will call and ask the rifle shotgun section this, but if the Match Target MT6400C model is not listed as banned, and if I make it compliant, is it still illegal? I understand that NYC is the land of NO, but why not stir up the nest, and challenge the laws by asking questions and discussing. |

OK - you first...I say you sling up your "Match Target MT6400C model is not listed as banned" and jump on the uptown 6. You should be good ta go - just say you're going range if NYPD bothers to ask... ![]() |

How do you plan on getting rid of the pistol grip?

in the land of Bloomie and the ilk before him, you simply can not have your moldy bread and eat it too. Must you live or stay within the confines of the 5 boroughs ? If so, give up the thought of ARs, AKs etc etc.
