If you are talking about intermodal containers, we got 5 from a Tallahassee, FL company to make a live fire training building. They hold heat really well. My Chief will be back to work on Monday and I will ask him and post a little more information.

Tax you should really check THIS thread out if you haven't already.  Lots of cool ideas.  It is said that these are not safe to bury in the ground without heavy reinforcement though.  Who knows maybe true, maybe not.  I just wouldn't want to put the old ammo can fort in it without being sure first.

As far as what they guy in paid for his containers in the above thread, I think he said around $2000 but that seems like a lot more than one would be worth.  I could be wrong on this, so you'll have to read through it.  I do remember that it was said that the 20' containers are much cheaper because they are less desirable for some reason.  that may be something worth looking into.

I have seen that thread before, makes me really want one.

I dont really want to bury it, Id perfer to sink it down a foot or 2 then cover the top.

Everywhere i have read says it's a bad idea to bury these things.. they rust to easily and can't support the load.

well, as long as it wasn't put all the way into the ground, I would think you would be alright.  It would very likely stand out from the rest of the landscape is the major downside to doing it that way though.  As far rusting out, the has to be some kind of paint or coating to keep the rust away.  It does strike as odd that these containers that spend a fair portion of their life on the open ocean would be susceptable to rust.  Or maybe that is why they are know to rust?

I think a hill of dirt, hopefully with some grass on it will fit in better then a big red metal box.

If you factor in moving them to your location $2k may be a reasonable estimate. There is a retired trucker up the road who made his whole house out of them. If someone hadn't told me I never would have noticed though. Looks a lot like a normal house from the road.

ETA: That corner of the road is weird house central. Directly across from the container house is an underground house and behind it is an octagonal house.

Please promise me you will do something with these containers if you get them.  For God's sake, don't just leave them IN THE FRONT YARD like an old broken down car. Your neighbors would not appreciate that.

Im sure some good car "undercoating" or possibly LINEX sprayed on them would help prevent them from rusting.  A buddy and I took and coated his propane tank for the house in some automotive undercoating before we buried half of it and its working great.

So, if I put up on blocks to prevent rust...no good?

I paid $1500 for a 40' delivered (about 60 miles one way for the delivery).  This was also 4 years ago.  Chancey's or Clancey's Towing out near Covington/Conyers were the people I bought it from.  At the time I could get a 50' used semi trailer for a little more $.

Heavy!!  about 6-8k pounds when empty - not easy to move after it gets delivered.

Stays pretty humid on the inside year round - thinking about putting in a dehumidifier.

reaks havoc on your cell phone reception if you are on the line and try to walk to the back of the container.

They are frequently listed in the "Heavy Machinery Trader"

Where can i find a heavy machine trader? Is that like an auto trader? At publix?

Usually, where ever auto traders are sold.  Think gas stations, grocery stores, etc...  They come out on Tuesdays and as they are not big sellers, often these stores will sell out of them fairly quick due to the low amount that they get.
