Why do they keep changing our street names?

They shoud leave Interstate avenue alone. Did I give sooooo much to the Mult.Co. taxes that we have nothing better to do?
$17,000 to Tri-met alone for changing signs.
Every business on the street must change  their business cards/menus/yellow pages

BTW: I liked the name Portland Blvd(now Rosa Parks Way) Don't get me started about Union Ave....

they can't keep their public schools open, but they can spend $17k on street signs to make a street more PC.  Only in f*in portland.  Do these people even know how to tie their own shoes?

When did they change Portland Blvd????? Wow...I miss everything...

I still find myself saying Union Ave., and it's been what, almost 20 years? I've never understood how changing the name of a street turned into the best way to honor someone. I would think the money would be better spent teaching kids who and what these people did. I mean really, can the average Portlander even tell you who Caesar Chavez was? Probably not.......

Let's not forget the city is going to build a "Hiring Center" for illegals. Of course, we need a new tax to fix the roads. The sad thing is, it would cost more for me to move out of the county due to increased fuel cost than the tax.

Since the current informal "Hiring Center" is at the corner of SE 7th & Burnside...
they should rename Burnside Ave. for Caesar Chavez.

About 6 months ago. I grit my teeth every time I take the Rosa Parks exit....

Interstate Ave got its name because it was the route from Vancouver to Downtown Portland before I-5.

The name of the road has historical significance.

ETA: My money used to bastardize my home town. Lets change the name of Pittock Mansion to Chavez Manor.

He would be so proud how universally fucked up every street named MLK BLVD is.

If enough of us could get together and put it on a ballot somewhere,  we could have COLT DR.  or BROWNING AVE     How about the corner of HEKCLER(SP) AND KOCH.

That would make the tree huggin DSH ( dirty smelly hippies )  happy.

A strange choice for Portland liberals due to his stand against illegal imigration. But I guess his work as a union lackey makes up for it.

from the Portland City Council:

"You are all a bunch of right-winged conservative bastards and we are presently tracking down your ISPs.  You all will be charged $1000 for expressing your views.  The money raised will be spent on renaming I-80 North to "Che Guevara Expressway", and I-5 to "Here we come and you can't stop us Prominade".  Any further comments, or expressions from any of you, and we will tax you another $1000....because we are in power, and you are not!"

No kidding!  Rosa parks what?

Union ave is still Union ave when I go across town...

Chavez did nothing in this town as far as I know.  Why don't we name it Phil knight ave, now he might be worth it.

So.....how come all the streets named for People Of Color have two names - Martin Luther King Blvd., Rosa Parks Way, and Cesar Chavez wherever....but all the old dead white guys like Ankeny and Going and Couch go with the bare patronymics?

Here is a fun fact:
Portland was almost named New Boston.
Asa Lovejoy and Francis Pettygrove fought over the names "Portland and New Boston".
The founding fathers settled it over a cion toss.

I learned this from my 10 yr olds school play 2yrs ago at Ainsworth Ellementary.

They ought to just get it over with and take the name of every white guy off everything in town, and rename if for some non-white person.  That's all this stuff really boils down to.  They've been telling us for decades that race shouldn't matter, but everytime I turn around somebody is laying out the race card.  It's all a bunch of hooey to me...
