I am trying to find out what the spec. of the muzzle threads on my (SGC) V22 are. Sadly not 1/2"UNF. The major diameter is .625"/ ie 5/8", but the tpi is 28. I thought 5/8" UNEF was 24 tpi. Anyone know what this might be?

Its ½ x 28” UNAEF thread.

You're still struggling with the reading part then........

No it's not, it's 5/8"x28 and that's it's name
It's what Armalite use on the AR10 and is just a proprietary thread, just like 1/2"x32 for 9mm's

That sounds more like it. Nothing special at all then? Would it be feasible to take a 1/2" UNF threaded muzzle brake or flash hider and have it re-threaded to 5/8"x28?

Sorry - was what I read when I saw an article that ran in Gun Mart - it claimed the V22 had that thread.

Some may do now. For some reason mine came with the 5/8" thread (nearly six years ago now). I asked Bob at the time and he said it was to reduce the muzzle thickness as little as possible.

Don't you mean UNEF?

Yes it is feasible but would be more convenient to change the thread on the barrel

I don't know. Do I? Not an engineer remember. Is UNEF your normal cooking thread for muzzles/moderators etc.?

I was looking to keep the existing muzzle thread because I have a moderator for it. I just wanted something to finish the muzzle off neatly when I'm not using the moderator.

1/2 unf is 1/2 x 20 tpi, the standard suppressor thread (parker hale etc etc)

1/2 unef is 1/2 x 28 tpi, which is the standard AR15 flash suppressor  thread

Either then really. I suppose the question is really can you push a 1/2" thread out to a 5/8", if there is enough outer wall thickness?

the major od of 1/2" thread would be .500,
you'd probably find the 5/8 X 28tpi minor diameter to be .6018 (guestimated) so you'd have at least .1018" (2.7mm give or take) to play with after removing the 1/2 thread of a standard flash hider.

eta. I don't have a drawing here but I think the minimum od on a standard flashhider is around 19mm (the grooves)

you'd just need to find a second hand flash hider, or new then a gun plumber or machinist to thread it for you,

The standard AR flash hider isn't long enough at the back (my V22 barrel is turned down .75", although not all of that is threaded) and I want it to stop against the shoulder. I shall probably have to have something made up especially. I've already caused one gunplumber to have a hissy fit over this,

It's easier to reduce the barrel diameter to 1/2" and re-thread that to 28tpi (standard AR muzzle thread) or 20tpi (standard thread for 22 rim fire). Flash hiders and moderators in these thread sizes are easy enough to get.

Yeah but I have a moderator for the existing thread and that would then be scrap.

Then sell it back to Bob and get a proper one.
