20# should be just fine for a govt model. If it's too wild then maybe a 22#.
A shok buff for range use would also be a good idea. |

Get some Wolfe springs in different weights and see what your gun runs most reliably with. I wouldnt go any lower than 18 1/2#.

with a 18# could I still shoot standard 45auto?

IIRC 16lb is standard for the government model so the 18lb should pose no problem. |

Check Brownellsfor the spring pak that covers from 16 to 24 lbs and start at 18 1/2 lbs. Check for reliable extraction/ejection pattern, case mouth crushing, etc. See below -

16lb is Gov't Model standard, but most smiths recommend 18 1/2lb. Thats what I run in mine just because I do occassionaly shoot some +P, but standard 230gr loads are what I use the most.

I've used 20# and 22# springs in a 1911 with standard ball loads, and they have been reliable.
I currently run an 18# for ball and my handloads, which are generally a little lighter. I think the 20# or 22# would be good for +P rounds. Let us know how they work out! |
