is the taurus model 85 a "clone" of a smith and wesson model pistol (snub nose classic version) if not, what size frame is it comprable to? TIA

It's equivalent in size to a J frame smith. The internals are slightly different though, and they don't fit some J frame holsters.

thanks, that was pretty much what i needed to know. I knew that taurus uses a different propriatary system (coil springs for mainspring) i was just hoping that it would fit a j-frame serpa holster.

J frames use a coil mainspring. I would ask the holster manufacturer if it will fit. The Taurus has a slightly wider cylinder IIRC.

Go into a store and "test fit" one if possible.

I got to shoot one this past weekend.  If you told me it was a S&W, I would have believed you.  It was pretty nice.  Very nice DA pull, SA had zero creep that I could detect.

Grip seemed larger than a J-frame though.  Thats the only dimensional difference that I could tell besides the front sight being beefier and taller.  But we are talking very minor differences.  Leather or soft synthetic holsters for a J should fit no prob.

I finally took mine out to shoot it this past week.
It isn't as dear to me as my 1911, but dammit, it's trying to be.
I wanted a SERPA but it wouldn't fit, I ended up with a Fobus
