I have found a few serial # lists for pythons, but mine starts with "PN,"  then a five digit #. None of the lists covers the "PN" part.   Do I assume the pn refers to polished nickel, or am I even dumber than usual?

The publicly available Colt serial numbers end with 1985.

The "PN" range guns were made later, so they don't show up on any list.
To get a production date, just call Colt during normal business hours, and they'll give you the year made over the phone.

They will NOT give you any other info on the gun.  For that, you have to buy a Colt Historical Letter.

"PN" is just a part of the normal serial number.  In the mid-1960's Colt started adding letter codes to serial numbers.
