I have a 1911 that is keyholing especially with semi wadcutters, but my other 1911 does just fine. Whats the cause??? thanks in advance

Possibilities:

1.  You've shot the rifling out.   Have a smith "slug" the bore and measure the slug to see if the bore's within tolerances.  Also have him check the rate of twist.

2.  More likely, there's some damage to the muzzle end that's upsetting the apple cart right as the round is leaving the barrel.

3.   Your lead cast bullets were poorly cast, i.e., the metals added to harden the alloy weren't mixed in good and the bullets themselves are not uniform in weight across the spinning axis.   (i.e., they're off balance).

4.   The lead cast bullets are too "long" for the rate of twist in your gun.

5.  Gas checks, if installed, are not attached properly and are coming off in flight, causing destablization of the spin.

Good luck.

Well yhe barrel has only 1k rounds thru it, and the ammo shoots fine thru my kimber. beginning to sound like a bad barrel though

Not sure.

Did you buy it used?

If you stand the barrel up, muzzle down, is it perfectly straight?

Also, does you bushing slide the entire length of the barrel without getting tight anywhere (which would be a sign of bulging).

Nevermind.

yes I bought it used, will have to try standing it up to see if it is square, but i know the muzzle is rought enough to snag your fingernail, and that sure doesnt sound like a quality Brown barrel

Couple other possibilities...  Excessive leading in the barrel or the riffling isn't deep enough to grap the lead bullet.  Both could be caused by lead bullets that are too soft.

Try to recover a fired bullet in the berm and look at the rifling marks. Is the bullet just skidding down the bore? Are the bullets undersize?

this is a Charles Daly 1911 with a "Brown" barrel, less than 1k rounds, freshly cleaned, muzzle O.D. is actually sharp, as in not finished. looks like the link was put on with hammer and punch very crude. I was under impression it was an Ed Brown, but I think it might have been Charley Brown!!! I got took I am afraid

Go To www.ballisticsresearch.com for a way to catch the bullet and inspect the groves.
The best way to really see whats happening.

Not since I have had it. There are no obvious dings on the muzzle, other that it is sharp on its O.D.

When the barrel is installed in the gun and the slide is "closed" does the endof the bore stick out past the bushing by about 1mm?

If not, it really does sound like that barrel was dropped or mashed on the muzzle end and followed by a cheapo garage gangster recrown job by bubba.
