Hey guys,
so my finances have seen a recent surplus of disposable income and I was thinking of getting a 1911, I have the AR, the shotgun, etc but I want a dedicated home defense pistol. Since it will be used as a home defense weapon and a range toy size won't matter but I have skimmed over some info about internal and external extractors on 1911. I didn't understand that well so here I am. Is one design more susceptible to reliability issues, is one type of extractor more expensive than the other. Anyways I was thinking of getting a Springfield GI, I can't drop a grand on a pistol right now but I heard Springfield is the next best thing. Anyways any info about extractors and any other pertinent information is appreciated. Thanks again |

You won't have to consider external extractors unless you are looking at an older Kimber, or any type or Sig or S&W 1911, possibly a few other models (older pre-cz dan wessons). Springfields are all (to my knowledge) internal only.
The debate of internal vs. external is a lengthy one. It seems there are qualified 1911 experts that think either is the "best" design. With that said, most 1911 makers use internal. Kimber had a run of bad external extractor guns years back, which drew a lot of criticism for external extractors as a whole. Sig and S&W have not had the same widespread issues. With regards to expense, that's a tricky one too. Internal extractors are more common to each other, whereas external extractors can vary and may not be interchangable. However even with internal extractors, they will not just be standard replacement items. They will have to be tuned and fit to work in your gun properly. |
| There is no denying that both designs work..........In the case of 1911's, pureists and my self included just don't like the look..........but again.......that does not mean they don't work.......and work they do.........The original Browning Hi-power used internal and was later changed to external............ |

agreed- they both work well if they are tuned correctly from the factory, and you dont shoot crappy steel cased ammo.
there are die hard guys on both sides of the arguement- almost as many as guys arguing over piston AR's and regular gas impingement. i own both. i had a problem with my kimber external extractor- but i bought it in 2002, and shot the hell out of it- not a safe queen- 4 years on my hip on duty, and ever since, it has been a competition beater gun. that being said, on the first sign of failure to extract- almost 8 years after i bought it, kimber wanted it back- told me not to hold my breath (they didnt BS me- they told me straight... i like that), and went to town. its wearing a completely new slide, with the new GI internal extractor that is so common, and so well liked by the 1911 masses. absolutely free of charge repair- i even told them to put a new ambi safety on while they were at it- they only charged me for the part- not the labor! and, they switched out my MSH- just because it was scuffed. -i may not be a kimber kool aid drinker, like i am with larue, and sig- but you have to admit the customer service was good, and they produce a quality weapon. all that BS aside, take my advice- buy the weapon that you like the best for every other reason BESIDES the extractor- the best trigger, the nicest features you can afford, etc. take a strong look at kimber's product, but dont discount a good springfield- if youre looking to upgrade someday, most pistol smiths will prefer to work on (and have more success with) springers than anything else. also- dont sell short the smiths, and the sigs. i just got a new sig, and its the weapon i bet my life on when i hit the streets. find the one you want, and put a bunch of ammo through it before you carry it. welcome to the 1911 family- were disfunctional, and tempermental, but no one shoots like we do!

| Thanks I appreciate it, oh I'm really going to go look around and make sure I like what I like but from stalking this forum for my price range Springfield's maybe the ticket but that doesn't mean I won't pull the trigger on a kimber, or Sig if its the right price. I wasn't sure about the 1911 until I held one and shot it at the range, when your holding a 1911, there's no denying what you have in your hands. |
