So I've owned an XDM 4.5" .45 for quite some time and loved the gun. Loved it so much I carried it every day for almost 2 years 13 + 1 all day. It shot great, but the weight to say the least was somewhat prohibitive. I also am very active and lift/carry heavy stuff all day at work. Not the most comfortable thing. I bit the bullet (haha gun pun), and traded straight across with someone local for the XDs 3.3" .45.
I like the gun, feels familiar though slimmer, I'm a little worried about mag cap at 5+ 1 but with 2 7rd backup mags and a little EXTRA practice at reloads, I'm positive I'll feel more secure with the capacity. As far as accuracy goes, yeah, it suffered a little bit, partly due to my new hold I'm practicing (pinky under the mag), a shorter sight radius, the trigger (recall fixed at factory) was def not the match trigger that I am used to but operated clean and crisp with a slightly heavier pull.. The felt recoil is a bit higher but not nearly as much as I thought it would be, this gun is very light. After a few I felt comfortable and confident in my ability to operate this firearm in a defensive situation. After about 50 I was able to put together 2" groups at the 7 mark, 5 shots rapid fire (sights determining my cadence). This leads me to my topic... The only thing that I wasn't absolutely happy/impressed/comfortable with was the fact that no matter how I held the gun, my slide would not lock on an empty mag when I was using the 5 round flush fit mag. If I pulled the slide back on an empty mag it locked every time. Firing the gun with the bought range w/e name ammo and I also tried a few times with speer gold dot, neither one would lock the slide back. I switched to the 7 rounds grip extended mags and every time last shot was fired, the slide locked. Is this me doing something wrong? Is there a problem with my gun? It's not a HUGE issue I guess. Every time I load a mag I have to rack the slide, big deal... But I'm used to slamming a mag and releasing the slide, this will add another step that I'll have to train in. I am just wondering if there's something I can do maybe with my grip to "fix" it, sort of like when my Beretta has feed/eject issues when my wife/lil brother fire it but never with me. I don't want to always have an extended mag in it as that defeats the purpose, In that case I might have just kept carrying the XDM. All in all aside from this little lockup hiccup, its a great shooting easily concealable gun that more comfortably fits my intentions than the XDM. |
