Government and CCO are the only ones I'd want.

I am very partial to the Commander. It's just the right size for me.

that one style that shoots those bullet things

The Commander is a good mix of full size shootablity and carry ease. You only drop 30 fps or so from the shorter barrel, it hides better and is more comfortable when sitting. On top of that every Commander I've shot has been reliable and I can't say that about the Officers.

On the other hand, I still love the good ole Gov 1911.

For me the Gov Model balances the best.

My 7" longslide is my favorite , but of those you listed I had to choose Gov't.
Link Posted: 7/27/2005 2:15:11 PM EDT
I'm of the opinion the commander size is the most balanced 1911.

It just feels so right in my hand.

Of course the gov model is going to win, why even have a poll?

Link Posted: 7/27/2005 4:21:59 PM EDT
I don't have one but the commander looks the best to me. I have a govt and I like it too but sometimes the look strikes me as long in the nose a hair. Depends on the model though.
Link Posted: 7/27/2005 5:09:43 PM EDT
Commander! I have both the Commander & Government models & the Commander gets a whole lot more range time.

Link Posted: 7/28/2005 9:38:50 AM EDT
I voted for the Officer's model, Since the important part for me is the shorter grip.

For CCW I prefer the Officer's grip frame coupled with slim carry grips, fitted to a commander length barrel and slide. I beleive Colt calls this a CCO????

The shorter O'models slide is just enough shorter that the IWB hoster I used would dig into my hip.

Most folks say the grip frame is the toughest part to conceal since the slide is in your pants.
I agree.

My happy compromise is my Kimber SS Compact, O'model grip frame and 4" barrel/slide.

++
Now for pure range use or open carry I will nearly always go with the 5" Gub'mint model.

Government model, blued steel, chambered in .45ACP.....just like God and JMB intended.
Link Posted: 7/28/2005 5:09:28 PM EDT
I voted Commander. I have been shooting mostly Govt. models but always liked the way a Commander went on target for me. Trouble is finding one that will shoot as well as most Government models, for me. I reciently found one that does and I like it best. I especially like the small Commander hammer with the old narrow, hand biting grip safety. The original memory groove.

If my 1911 isn't 5", it isn't a 1911.

I don't understand why people who buy bobbed and molested versions don't just get a plastic gun.

Link Posted: 7/29/2005 2:11:34 AM EDT
Favorite is the officers although I have a full size also. Both have been 100% so far (both are Springfield's Loaded Models and in stainless).
Link Posted: 7/29/2005 2:18:36 AM EDT
well, it's gotta go bang when I pull the trigger.

preferably with the bullet coming out of the front of the barrel, towards the target.

it'd be nice if the sights showed me where the bullet was gonna go beforehand.

Which is why I said, why even have a poll.

1911 breeds this "only this way" mentality.

Please elaborate on yours and post pics for us to see!
It's not everyday you get to see a genuine 1911.

For range use ad IDPA, a 5" is the way to go. For sitting in a drawer next to the nightstand, again a 5" is the ticket. For deep concealment (which is the only way I can carry at work), a 3" does the trick. If told I could only have one, it would be a Commander because I think it is an acceptible compromise between size, accuracy, reliability and feel.

Sometimes a similar but different tool is the best tool for the job.

Aren't a phillips bit screwdriver and a straight bit screwdriver both screwdrivers??

Sometimes a small straight bit will half assed work on a phillips screw. But how many times will a phillips screwdriver work on a straight slotted screw?

My point???? sometimes a similar but slightly different tool it the best tool for the job!

My Gov models are the most user freindly for overall.

But, my compacts are the easiest to conceal for me when that is my primary concern, like CCW.

How many "plastic Pistol" owners use the same logic?
G21 for tactical/Range/ & open carry situations....smaller compact versions for CCW.

BTW...I do use my 1911 pattern pistols as well as various "plastic Guns" for all around use and CCW!

Combat Commander, for me. The weapon balances well, points well, doesnt recoil appreciably more than the Gov model and is a bit better to carry. It feels right! Dont much care for aluminium frames.
The Govt model always seems a bit much length-wise and the balance is a bit off. I realise that this is perhaps subjective... OTOH I have and have had several Colt-made Govts and trust them with my life.
I have one of the first Officers ACP's Colt made available in the 80's, and have never liked it or trusted it. Recoil is unpleasant as is the blast... and worse, it has blown off the front sight at least twice and sheared off the retaining "tit" on the recoil spring cap. Imagine my surprise when the slide continued to go forward under recoil..... Replaced the grips and the recoil springs but still don't like or trust it. I still have it because it came to me from my late brother's estate, but it's a safe-queen.
