I have a 22/45 with a tactical solutions rail and want to put a red dot on it. Just want to see what is the preferred optic out there as well as what placement on the rail is recommended. Pics welcome and would be helpful. Thanks.

The farther forward you are able to put it, the easier it is to find the red dot.

Ultradots...expensive but nice.  Primary Arm's are good too.  Bushnell TRS-25.

I put a Weaver red dot reflex sight on mine and it works very well and it's not too expensive $70-$80.
I placed it right above the center of my grip.

I have a Primary Arms micro on mine and it works quite well.  The price can't be beaten either.

Sweet set up.  How did you mount it so cleanly (i.e. no knob)?

With the Fastfire mount ;)  (http://www.amazon.com/Burris-Fastfire-Mount-fits-Rugger/dp/B000UV3ZPG/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1382884883&sr=8-4&keywords=burris+fastfire+iii+mount)

I vote for either the Fastfire or check out some Ultradots if you don't mind the tube-type of design.

Didn't know those existed.  Appreciate the info. (not sarcasm)
