Here's my top: (keep in mind I'm 5'7 muscular build)

1: USP .40c
2. USP .40f (still working on concealing this one!
3. Glock 23
4. Some sort of 5 shot .357 revolver?  Or  USP .45c

I am addicted to HKs!!

I just bought a Glock G23 also and thats what im going to use for my CCW. I dont know how it works in CA but if you use a revolver to qualify with thats all you can carry is a revolver. I would just use the Glock. I bought the Uncle Mikes body holster and ive been carrying it around the house to get used to and i think its alright. And im 5'7 skinny as hell.

Seeing how you're in CA, I figure you kinda need deep cover? (important to keep it hidden, right?)
So I say start small, then when you feel comfy carrying that get a bigger piece.
My favorite revovler for deep cover: S&W 642 (makes a great back up gun later, you should have this even if you carry something else regulerly.

1911s, I started with the full sized springfield loaded model, now I carry a Champion LW, some times I carry the full sized strong side, Champion weak side (I train with each hand).

Makarov makes a sweet little carry gun.

I'd say for just "casual" carry the 642 will do it all, it's very accurate for a snubby. The cool thing is it gos well in many carry methods, ie: pocket, IWB, OWB, ankle, fanny pack, some times I just stick it in my sock if I'm going some place where haveing a gun would be frowned upon.

If you start with too big a piece you'll end up not carrying it and becomeing dis-enchanted with the whole CCW thing.

I'm a fan of the Glock 30. I'm 5'9" with average build and my G30 hides well just aft of my right hip. I use a Predator IWB holster and it's invisible even under a size medium t-shirt.

I carry a Kel-Tec P32.  It's not a great gun, but it's about the smallest and lightest auto you can get.  It's reliable, and I can carry it anywhere without anyone knowing it's on me.

+1 on the S&W 642.  I carry it every day and it's small enough and light enough that I never notice that it's there.  On some occasions I carry a Kimber Ultra

I have carried a full-size 1911 and am transitioning to a G19; I have also carried a J-frame S&W.

I suspect for those who have a choice, there are a lot of Colt Commander size pistols out there; but I think that there are a lot of people carrying .38 J-frames and Kel-Tec .32 on a daily basis.

I'd like to point out that my choices are for CARRY and are based on size.  These are not necessarily what I consider to be the best handguns, just the best for carrying concealed.

Glock 36 (.45ACP) - Excellent stopping power, Compact size, Glock perfection

S&W 340PD (.357) - Excellent stopping power, Compact size and super light weight, Reliability of a revolver

Kel-Tec P3AT (.380) - It's all about the size and weight.  I keep mine in my back pocket most of the time and forget it's even there.

I don't have a 4th b/c these are the only ones I have experience with that I would consider for CCW.

JMHO...  I carry it all the time...  I'd recommend putting it into a Comp-Tac IWB holster.  Works great.

HK P7 PSP.  Mags are less than 10 rounds so no legal grey area in ban states.  If the gun is taken away from you most dumb thugs won't know how to operate it.  A lot less likely to accidentally discharge than a Glock.  Peace of mind when it is kept chambered.

Down side is you can buy two 3 Glocks for the price of these.

Wow...I'm all alone on this one. I carry a Springfield XD-40 service model (4" barrel).

I also have a Ruger Vaquero .45 Colt on my CCW card  (We have to list any pistols we want to carry on our card).....lol....it's too big to carry, but I sometimes stash it in my trailer while traveling (Which I could probably legally do anyways).

Looks like I am all alone as well.  I carry a Glock 32 in .357SIG for primary.  Nothing really different in size from the G23 that so many here have chosen.  My choices:

1.  G32  (357SIG)
2.  Kahr MK40 (.40 S&W)
3.  Kahr PM9 (9mm)
4.  S&W J Frame (.357 Mag)

My top choices are:
1. S&W 642- Easy to carry anytime
2. G 22- Easy to carry with the right clothes, lots of bullets, my long time carry gun.
3. G 27- a good backup to the G22, light with plenty of ammo.
4. G17- Bought it or IDPA but 18 rounds of Cor-bon makes a good carry gun.
5. full size steel 1911- SA loaded, great to shoot but really heavy and difficult to carry. I have a good gun belt and a VMII but its still not for me.

Some runners up would be: (some I've tried, some I haven't)
*Any Glock but the 23 and 19 are real good choices
*Light weight 1911 in 4 inch and aluminum frame
*Beretta Cougar series
*Any SIG

Some I didn't care for:
*Any Taurus pistol
*Any Ruger pistol esp. the sp101 (too heavy for a snubbie)
*Cheapo 38 snubbies like Charter arms or Rossi
*Beretta 92 series- too big, balance doesn't suit me
*All steel 1911's- I have one, and even carry it once in a while, usually around the house for about 15 minutes before I put on a Glock.

***What works for me may not work for others and my least favorites might works great for somebody else. For example, My regular shooting partner carries a full size all steel 1911 all the time and has a PPK for backup. Not my first choice but he wouldn't have any other combo.

My first choice combo is the G22 on the belt and the 642 on the ankle.

Good luck choosing your favorites.
