Okay, I am absolutely, positively thrilled with my new TRP. Having solved my initial issues with my Wilson mags...I'm ready to make it my own.
Have decided to change grips (ordered lightweight Alumagrips in anodized aluminum to contrast with the Armory Kote). The only other thing I'd like to do, strictly out of preference, is change the guide rod to a standard size and eliminate the need for a tool to take down. Please offer suggestions on best source for replacement parts and opinions on making this change. I will be ordering a full custom 1911 in the near future, so I'm not really looking to modify the TRP very much. Not that it needs any mods...pretty fine pistol as is. Thanks in advance for any helpful information. |
| Ed Brown EB is the go-to place for G.I. guide rods and plugs. They have blued, and stainless––about $25 plus postage for the set. I'm sure there are other good places, as well, but it was an easy order, and prompt delivery. |

Cool I was wondering about this also. Is the GI length rod a drop in part. Why do they use a 2 piece ??? The g.i. guide rod, and plug are drop-in. The spring doesn't need to be changed. Why the two-piece system? That's a huge discussion item, but there isn't much proof provided that there's any advantage and a LOT of information to the contrary. Marketing hype is the prevailing reason suggested. If you want the gorey details, suggest you search this and the 1911 forums on the subject. |

It appears that the rod is available only in blue. I'm going to order today. I guess it really doesn't matter if the rod is blue or SS, since you can't see it anyway. |

I think the rod is available only in blue/parkerized but as noted, its buried in the pistol so it wouldn't matter much to me.
As for using the back half ot the two-piece guide rod, I'm not speaking from personal experience but its been reported on other 1911 forums that the square/sharp forward edge of the back half of the two-piece rod could snag a coil and perhaps kink the spring, or cause a maulfunction. Reality, or paranoia who knows? The stubby guide rod has a stubby or rounded front edge. I'm sure the half guide rod would work in a pinch, but for the few dollars involved, I'd go for the stubby. |

My thoughts exactly. I just need the peace of mind. I have sent my order in to Midway for both parts. Thanks again for your insight. |

That's a good point. If you're the type of person that's concerned with that sort of thing, then you should probably go ahead and replace it. In my particular application, I determined it to be a non-issue, so I kept what I had |
