Was thinking of picking up a GI model since it is in my price range and I like the looks. What about it, yay or nay?

It is a bare bones 1911 that should be combat accurate out of the box. I would suggest looking at the Mil Spec. For a few more dollars you will get improved sights, lowered ejection port, beveled magwell, etc. Compare the two on Springfield's website. I you don't think you need any of the other features the Mil Spec offers, go with the GI. Shop around though. I found a LNIB Mil Spec on the EE for what most people pay for a NIB GI.

Good Luck

Never mind. I see now the link I posted was a G.I. model erroneously referred to as the milspec model. The serrations are the obvious giveaway.

+1

I would pick a mil-spec over the GI/WW2 model eight days a week. Sights alone make the mil-spec a better buy, never mind the other stuff.

My .o2

I have both a GI and a Mil-Spec.  If you can afford the Mil-Spec I would get it as it is a great base for modification if you want to do that, if not the sights and the relief to the ejection port are worth every penny.  Don't let me scare you away from the GI if that is what you want as the gun is great for the price.

my 4 inch GI is my daily carry piece, just ordered some nighthawk grips for it, to boot.

sights can be replaced, and I love not having a bushing to deal with when I take it apart

I have a GI model and it runs 100%

I am trying to find taller sights as we speak... 10-8 makes a drift in I think...

I love the feel of mine but just wish it had a few other mods like an extended thum safety, beavertail grip safety and extended slide stop. Should have got a Loaded standard or a MIL-SPEC.

I'll get this one to my liking and all will be well... but if I had to do it over again I would have waited and got one closer to my liking.

YMMV

I have a Milspec that I picked up 9 years ago it has been absolutely reliable. If I do my part it is accurate, not a match gun, but a personal defense gun.
The price was good and I would buy another without hesitation

just picked up a Mil-Spec Stainless.  Two of the first mod are and rubberized grips and an ambi-safety.  Maybe some night sights down the road.

Just a heads up for the front sight replacement. You will find that companies like Trijicon make the two standard sized posts or tenon which are .125 and .55 choices. Springfield uses a .080 or .082 which is not available unless you buy one of theirs from them.

Or you have the front of the slide cut for a dovetail sight.

Thanks for the heads up.  I think I'm going with the dovetail front sight.

Oh yea, you can also have the .125 cut down to size then staked in. But most people have been recommending the dovetail for easier sight changing and more options later on.

I had my smith install a wide tenon front. He removed just enough of the stake to fit nicely. No problem for an experienced smith.

I was reading a thread in the Team forum of a guy who got one. He had tons of problems with his and a few others chimed in saying that it wasn't Springfield's best 1911 (they didn't like the milspec either). The result of the thread said go for the Springfield Loaded 1911 or one of others.

I don't have a 1911 yet, but I plan on getting this one...

I was talking to SGB (Mod of the 1911 section) about it and he said "The Springfield Loaded Model is probably the best buy in the production
1911 realm."

I went with this and got a lemon . It happens. Mine went back to Springfield last month and I'm still waiting on it. Anyway, I used to own a Park'd Champion that was the best pistol I ever had- I'm a real dumbass for selling it.

Please be sure to report back on how it shoots after the repair.

I bought a new milspec a few months ago and I love it.  I have only shot ball ammo with it so far but it has been 100% for the first 600 rounds.  I paid $600 for it and used the loaded coupon to get 5 more mags at $9 each.

Yesterday I was at the gun shop getting powder and saw a GI 4 inch champion in the used section.  The tag said $395.  I went back today and got it for $380.  I haven't shot it yet, but I have no fear of it not working.  SA has great CS if I do have any problems and I have faith they would make anything right.
