I got a Smith & Wesson chiefs special model 36. I got it used for dirt cheap. Overall it is in great shape, but there is a little rust on the barrels exterior. It was a police officers back up weapon. Anyone know what to do? Or how to clean or prevent? Its a great gun and worth saving. Thanks |

Depending on how deep the rust is (PITTING) or just surface rust (FRECKLING), some very fine steel wool (0000) & oil gently rubbed over the rust in one direction will usually remove some of it. Or just keep it as is by not letting it get any worse, unless it bothers you. Hopefully the bore & chambers are rust free. If it is going to be used & carried a lot, cosmetics aren't really that important, compared to accuracy & reliability. There are several brands of gun oil / preservatives available, any of which is better than none at all. It is a great gun, glad you want to "save" it. |
