I've got a Colt Series 70 Govt Model that I've had for going on 30 years.  It's been shot ALOT over the years: range time, plinking, USPSA, IDPA, USMC range qual, dispatching the occansinal ferial dog and carry gun when going to Memphis.

I've been pondering having it rebuilt or replacing it with a newer 1911.  It'll cost more to rebuild the gun than it cost new but would I have as good a gun as buying a new one?

This is what has been done to it over the years:
Wilson three dot sights and extended trigger.
Chip McCormmick hammer and sear.
Clark match barrel bushing (hand fitted)
Flat mainspring housing
Ejection port lowered
Wolff 16.5 lb recoil spring
Misc worn parts replaced.

If the Frame is good condition, rebuild.

No brainier here, rebuild.
Sounds like the gun has great sentimental value to you already, or you would have sold it long ago.
Rebuild it and make it personal to you, and you will have an heirloom to pass down through the family.

If it's still working, leave it alone and buy another one to tinker with. After 30 years and thousands of rounds, that one has earned the right to be a little rough around the edges.

OK, here's what I would like to do to it:
-gun inspected replace worn internal parts
-Novak or Trijcon night sights installed (dovetail fornt)
-beavertail grip and extended safety installed
-carry bevel job
-refinish w/OD green frame and matte black slide

Learn from lots of guys' mistakes including my own.  Do all of the machine work you want before refinishing.
i.e. front strap treatment.  Make sure you aren't going to want anything done later because it makes the job more expensive the next time around.

This guy seems to have a lot of respect around here.
Just use the site for reference of what you want done and he even has pics and prices.
