I was engaged in a casual conversation yesterday with a friend. I noticed he was wiping his M&P .40 down with one of those silicone cloths from Wal-Mart. He disassembled the weapon and wiped down the barrel, spring, and the slide with the cloth. He put it back together without applying any oil and said he was ready to go.
Now I think I know better and I always apply a small amount of oil to the friction points and the barrel. He said it was a waste of time and that his silicone cloth applied enough lube.
What does arfcom say? |

I say forget that silicone cloth crap, I use Break-Free CLP. Always have, for all my weapons.
Maybe that cloth he was using provided lube to the specified points, who knows. I do prefer simple Break-Free though, and make damn sure the lube is where it's supposed to be. Just the way I was taught. |

He's doing it this way or he's doing it the wrong way:

I would not rely on the silicone as lube.
I use Brian Enos' Slide Glide, and I absolutely love it. The slide and rails get Slide Glide, applied in a decently thick layer...the barrel gets some on the outside, adn then wiped down to leave a simple film...the guide rod gets the same treatment as the barrel...and the rest of the gun gets CLP. Once assembled, I rack the slide 5 times, and then wipe away any excess Slide Glide that come out of the rails... |
