I was engaged in a casual conversation yesterday with a friend. I noticed he was wiping his M&P .40 down with one of those silicone cloths from Wal-Mart. He disassembled the weapon and wiped down the barrel, spring, and the slide with the cloth. He put it back together without applying any oil and said he was ready to go.

Now I think I know better and I always apply a small amount of oil to the friction points and the barrel. He said it was a waste of time and that his silicone cloth applied enough lube.

What does arfcom say?

I say forget that silicone cloth crap, I use Break-Free CLP.  Always have, for all my weapons.

Maybe that cloth he was using provided lube to the specified points, who knows.  I do prefer simple Break-Free though, and make damn sure the lube is where it's supposed to be.  Just the way I was taught.

Yep, nothing but CLP for me. I got a cheap cleaning kit and it had one of those silicon cloths in it. I haven't even taken the cloth out of the plastic yet. Sounds like a dumb idea.

The only thing those are really good for is wiping down prints after handling blued, nickeled, or Park'd guns when storing them.

Gun oil or simple lithium grease if nothing else.

Have your friend read the owner's manual for his M&P.

Smith and Wesson gives detailed instructions of how to clean and lube the pistol.

The manual also  includes photographs of 7 spots to lube with clp.

He's doing it this way or he's doing it the wrong way:

I would not rely on the silicone as lube.

I use Brian Enos' Slide Glide, and I absolutely love it.  The slide and rails get Slide Glide, applied in a decently thick layer...the barrel gets some on the outside, adn then wiped down to leave a simple film...the guide rod gets the same treatment as the barrel...and the rest of the gun gets CLP.

Once assembled, I rack the slide 5 times, and then wipe away any excess Slide Glide that come out of the rails...

Forget the cloth, forget oil that runs and use a light coating of good gun grease from a QTip or your finger on all slide to frame friction points, springs and the guide rod.
I like Tetra myself.

I would want to use more lube than that, but I usually shoot SIGs and 1911s. They do love their lube!
