Nutshell––––

Around  the year 2000 Smith & Wesson started producing revolvers with a built in key lock.
It is NOT a safety per se , but is meant to be used when the gun is in storage.

There have been many "internet reports" of the lock causing the guns to jam during firing.
Also the cosmetic appearance of the lock is disliked by some shooters.

Therefore the open market tends to put a premium on the older "pre-lock" revolvers ,
and you will notice the price difference if you compare used guns of both types on the
Internet gun auctions.

There's some info here: http://archive.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=5&f=33&t=60371 There's a link to the S+W forum in that thread and some comments on how to remove the lock.

It is not illegal to remove it and removing it won't affect the weapon's functionality.  I'd tell you how to do it but, all my Smiths are pre-lock.

With all the negative feedback, S&W is releasing some models without the lock.

My brother just bought a new production S&W 640 without the lock.  He had to look around but found one.

Lock:

Prelock:

disregard the difference of barrels, grip, etc... the lock is the hole above the cylinder release.

There is a lot of Internet comments about the ILS on the new S&W revolvers but none of the negative feedback kept me from buying my two 686 Plus wheel guns.  I've had about 1k rounds through my 4" model and never did I experienced any issues with the handgun.  I got my 2.5" model a couple months ago and again shooting some .357 magnum and +P .38 spl rounds through it and the ILS never caused the revolver to lockup or stop shooting.  If there were any recall on these handguns that S&W had issued, could someone let me know about it?

The heavier models like your 686's don't appear to have a problem. J-frames in general and Scandium guns are the problem.

It's more of a sacrilege thing. There is just something wrong with a lock on a gun. But the guns built since the locks
came out are a lot nicer than anything smith put out for several years prior. The new owners take pride in what they sell.

I have 3 S&W revolvers with the lock (617, 686 Plus, and 500) and pretty much forgot I even had a lock on them until I started reading the gun forums again. Never turned the locks on, left the keys in the case, and have never had a problem.

Is anyone making an aftermarket "plug" to fill the lock hole yet?

I'm looking at a Sc J-frame for a BUG and there's no sign of those without locks...

I never heard about an aftermarket plug that is being produced yet but I'm sure someone is going to make one.  I've heard of using JB Weld to plug the hole after removing the ILS.
