I know that building a 1911 is more like building a watch than snapping an AR together.  This is a test of my patience, my ability to learn, and most importantly it's a fun summer project.  I know I'm in for a fun and aggravating experience, I've done the research.

Having gotten that out of the way, I've got a Rock Island frame, slide, and barrel winging its merry way to my FFL.  Probably pick it up next week.  Now I need the rest of the pieces.  Unless someone can convince me different, I'm going to get the builder's kit from Sarco, the one that's sans the pieces I'll have.  I realize that some of this stuff may be junk, so here's my question: What parts of the 1911 would you absolutely refuse to compromise on?  Which parts should I just scrap completely and buy name brand from Midway or Brownells?  The pistol, aside from being my summer project, may end up being a gift to my best friend.  I'm looking for reliability above all, and combat accuracy.

I'm fairly certain I can keep stuff like the mainspring housing,  thumb safety, etc.  Which parts do I need to replace?

How crazy do you want to go?  How much money are you willing to spend?

You could easily use Sarco's parts kit and have a fine functioning 1911, or you could buy a tons of Wilson Combat parts and make a really sweet setup, but the cost will skyrocket.

I'm pretty sure I could use the Sarco parts and have something that functioned decently.  I'm just wondering what parts a hardcore 1911 afficiando would look at and say "Nope, not taking a chance on that."  Again, reliability is my ultimate goal, and if I have to buy Wilson parts to do that, that's ok by me.  If I don't HAVE to replace something with an expensive Wilson part, that's terrific, I'm just wondering what parts I can salvage from the Sarco kit without compromising reliability.

I would not use any of the parts you listed right down to and including the frame.

this; kinda pointless imo to invest lots of $$$s into quality specific parts built on a meso-meso foundation...YMMV

but, i would not compromise on: springs, FP, FP plate, hammer, safety, and slide stop

good luck though, and keep us updated!

This is exactly the kind of info I was looking for.  Thanks much.

I'm not planning on putting a ton of high quality parts into this gun, just replacing the parts that REALLY need it, hence my question.  I figure $200 for the frame, barrel, and slide, and then another $250-300 for parts.

Thanks again.
