I have gone out and shot this pistol just about every day since I purchased it. It's my new favorite that makes me smile every time I press the trigger.

Nothing compares to a 617. They cost a lot because they are worth it. Nice grips btw.

I bought this Ruger new model single six about a week prior to getting the 617. While it is a lot of fun, I still enjoy shooting the 617 more. If it weren't for the .22 WMR cylinder, I'd probably sell it.

For me, the ultimate 22 would be the old classic 17 ( no under lug, no lock proper blue) with a ten shot cylinder |

The 617 is a league of its own. I enjoy my 6”. I wouldn’t mind a 4” also.
The 63 is enjoyable as a smaller revolver. I also enjoy Single Sixes. After that, I’m a Ruger Mark fan.

I love my 4” 617 but I start having ejection issues after about the third or fourth cylinder in a range session. Brass gets really hard and obnoxious to eject. Maybe it’s just exceptionally dirty ammo?

A lot of people on S& W forum talk about using a finishing reamer in the chambers to take care of it. Also very ammo dependent- better quality ammo tends to do this less. Most buy the cheapest bulk crap they can find to run plinking 22’s and it is really an injustice to these fine guns My ammo preferences in order of price Lapua pistol king or pistol osp SK pistol match or pistol match special Eley club or contact CCI standard Aguila super extra standard or high velocity solids Anything else CCI If desperate federal I won’t shoot armscor Remington or Winchester unless it is free |

OP, I really love the grips, what are they?
I adore my 617, I think I bought it new when they were around six hundo. I have a really excellent DeSantis Dual Hunter (I think?) holster that wears either strong side or cross and it's just the BEST. That being said, I have a six inch and I REALLY think I wish I would have picked up the 4 instead. 6 is a whole bunch of extra barrel and weight if it's going to be out camping and such, but perfect for playing at the range. |

They are VZ grips. Here's the model number on the package the grips came in. I am also conflicted a little on the 6" or 4" barrel, but my primary use is range fun, so I guess 6" is just fine for now. In typical arfcom fashion, I may have to eventually get a 4" and own both!

I originally wanted to go with some handsome wood grips from Hogue, but a friend of mine sold me these new VZ grips he had no use for that were laying in his closet. I do like the way they compliment the stainless finish of the revolver.

I use a 4" SP101 .22 LR for the same purposes as your 617; here it is wearing wooden Hogue Cocobolo grips:
 Full size non-CCW grips are a PITA to find for that frame size. Your 617 is no doubt a better gun, but for the price difference I am not sure I can wring out the capability difference in them, so my SP101 will do for me. But I've shot the hell out of this little thing; it's now an "always" gun for range trips. |

I bought mine last year and I love it and other than grips, only thing I've done is add a Dawson Precision fiber optic front.

The most accurate and best .22LR Revo I've ever shot (regularly) was my Grand-Pa's "Charter-Arms" 3" taper barreled 7 shot Nickel finished model. I have no idea of the model number and dumb-ass younger brother lost it (almost cracked his face) when I found out the truth after 2 years of questions as to where is it. That might be the most accurate handgun I've ever shot even...
But yea, a Smith M17 looks to be a good choice. Are they capable of shooting .22Magnum's as well. I don't know much about them but the cylinder looks to be long enough to shoot either LR or Mags, and shorts as well which is a plus if shooting CB Caps for pest control as well. I'm really interested in an M17 now. Thanks for posting OP! |

I'm really interested in an M17 now. Thanks for posting OP! .22 Magnum is a bit larger than .22LR. Would have to have a separate fitted cylinder to use .22 mags. Plus , the reverse (.22 LR in a .22 Mag) doesn't work either. Chamber is enough larger that it generally will split the .22 LR case if fired in a Magnum. Hence the Model 48.

I love rimfire revolvers and have a dan wesson mode,l 15 in 22lr.
Seems that if you shoot in decent volume you have trouble with extraction pretty early on. |

While a centerfire S&W revolver can have the trigger weight lightened and having the trigger characteristics improved with a little effort, the rimfire S&W revolvers are a different story. You will have to do a whole lot of polishing to only have the working surfaces on a S&W that nicely finished and you still will not have exchangeable roller bearings to adjust stacking :).
