Kind of a weird problem.  I normally run ball ammo through my personal weapons for practice but on occasion I will run the ammo I like to carry in them to make sure all is well.  I also normally only carry Wilson 47Ds in my 1911s but in an effort to have a lot of mags for fun and to cut down loading time between rounds I broke out all my original SA mags that I got from them on my first loaded order and loaded them up with 2 boxes of 230gr ranger plus 5 Wilson mags.

I set up a couple targets and ran the Wilson mags, no problem.  I then loaded the first SA mag and fired 6 rounds and the slide locked back on my weapon.  The 7th round was sitting loose onto of the mag.  It did not eject nor load into the pipe, just sat on the top of the mag.  This was the case with all 5 of them that I tried.  I tried it with both springers with the same luck.  If I ran ball all of them to include the SA mags ran without a problem.

Any suggestions to what the problem is that I am encountering?  SA only had one response, send the mags in and we will fix or replace them.  That is all well and good but I want to know what the problem is.  I assume that it is the mags since the Wilson mags ran perfect but I am concerned all the same to make sure that it is the mags and not the weapon.

I'll try an uneducated guess. I would suspect that the hollowpoint struck the frame and bounced the slide back to fully open where the slide stop engaged on the empty mag. Maybe the bullets in the mag were pushing the round being chambered up into the chamber and when there were no more bullets in the mag on the last round, it lost that tension. And, since I suspect Wilson uses better springs, the mag itself was doing this with them. Was there any deformation of the hollowpoint on those last rounds?

Edited to say maybe not a spring problem but a follower problem.

No the HP's were still in good shape.  Sounds like that was a pretty good guess though.  Not sure, these same mags ran perfect with the ball and the HP on the Rangers is not like to old flying ashtrays, but it is still an hp.  I am going to run a few hundred rounds through the mags before I send them back.  They still run well with ball and that is normally what I use them for anyway.  Just had me curious.  Thanks for the response and if I figure it out I will let you know.

I am also going to replace springs in 2 of the mags and keep 2 the way they are and see if that helps.
