While shooting my Combat Commander, the firing pin retainer slid down 1/8 inch and caused the firing pin to protrude out of the breach face.  This would not allow another round to feed(thank God, can you say slam fire full auto?) and created an interesting jam.  Other than a weak firing pin spring, what might be the cause?  This happened twice in 50 rounds of winchester USA 230 JHP.  Any suggestions are appreciated.

How many rounds do you have down range on this Colt?

I would replace the firing pin spring as mentioned and the firing pin itself.

The fit of the retainer to the slide and extractor should also be looked at for signs of wear and considered for possible replacement.

Since a complete rebuild(customizing), I might have 1000 rounds through it.  I however have no idea if the smith replaced the firing pin and spring when he worked on it.  I will replace the firing pin, spring and retainer.  I hope this works.  The retainer will need work since it was modified for low mount sights.  Thanks for the info.

A fairly common malfunction in 1911's. Some guys try to peen them, but that is a PITA. Swenson's and early Wilson's often had the retainer drilled and tapped for a tiny allen screw to prevent this, but today several mfg. make slightly oversized retainers...Brown and Wilson among them. You can probably find what you need in the Brownell's catalog...and it certainly won't hurt to replace the f. pin and spring either, as SGB suggested.
