I always have thought it odd how the basically just rebrand Ubertis and call them their own. They've been offering a "Rooster Shooter" which is styled after the ivory-griped SAA John Wayne occasionally carried in movies, particularly in True Grit. I have no desire to purchase that particularly gun from them, largely because the price is a little absurd and I don't like the "Old West" finish, but also because I thought the grips could probably be had elsewhere. So I emailed them, not expecting much, to see if I could buy the grips separately or if they had them custom made through a certain grip maker. I can't be for sure whether they actually lied to me or not, but they told me the grips are custom and can not be bought through them or elsewhere. Buffalo Brothers Cowboy Store makes the exact grips and you can have them customized to reflect different agings. I've read that they are the actual supplier of the grips to Cimarron, though that could be poppycock. Besides, based on the real pictures I've seen of the Cimarron Roosters, the grips are quite a bit more orange looking than the studio shots on their website. The Buffalo Brothers grips look much nicer. I also asked about the Holy Smoker (grips styled after the Hand of God from 3:10 to Yuma) and they said those were custom as well. That I'm more inclined to believe because I've looked before and have only ever been able to find one place that has ever made them before, and they cost a premium. So yeah, I'm probably blowing it a bit out of proportion. I understand that they're interested in generating sales for their business, so why tell someone where else the same product can be had? And about the rebranding thing... I know they're not the only ones doing it. I just think the rest of them are a little bit more open about where their stuff comes from. Not a single mention of Uberti on their website. Just that they offer the "best" reproduction out there (which is not only debatable but pretty much wrong). Of course it's advertising and no company is going to say "Our's are good but they're not the best." ![]() Sorry if I ruffled some feathers. I own an Uberti and know its limits. In fact if I had the money for the good Cimarrons (basically just the Uberti but with an American-done CCH finish) I'd probably buy it. But at that point you might as well be looking at USFA's stuff for the money. My whole premise just got shot down by the ATF. |

Um, the guy who owns/runs Buffalo Bros just got arrested for selling firearms without an FFL, and the ATF confiscated over 1000 firearms from his house.
So, I'm guessing you might NOT be able to get these grips direct right now. http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/local/articles/2010/07/13/20100713atfguns0713.html |
