My dad picked up a Taurus titanium in .45 Colt not so long ago that I shoot every once in awhile. This little thing is a hoot to shoot, very accurate and when you shoot poppers, you can really tell that 250gr bullet is smacking them. I was thinking earlier (I dont do it too often, it gets me into trouble) and I believe this gun, loaded with cci shotshells, would make excellent snake medicine for when I venture into the woods. Thing is, the gun has the barrel porting that Taurus seems obsessed with doing. Does anyone know if these shotshells and such porting works OK together? I sure do appreciate the help! |
Dude, the Vang-Comp is a type of choke system; no holes. There's an article about reloading shotshells for pistols in my "ABCs of Reloading". IIRC the author did say something about compensated barrels, but I can't remember what. If I remember, I'll check it out tonight and post again tomorrow. |
| Have no experience with the .45 Colt load but do with several others calibers. Thing to remember is to keep the range short since the barrel has rifling that will scatter that shot. Have a TC Contender in .357 mag with the Hot Shot tube. Tube stops the spin during the last inch or so from the muzzle and really tightens the pattern. Had no problems firing CCI .45 ACP shotshells thru my ported M1911 (bbl, slide and bushing is magna ported). Do reload shot shells in .38/.357 and .44 spl with the Speer capsules. Loads of fun. |

Dude, every pic of a vang comped shotgun I have seen has been ported Directly from the Vang Comp website: http://www.vangcomp.com/ "The Vang Comp System (VCS), designed by gunsmith Hans J. Vang, is a set of modifications to shotgun barrels. The alterations to the barrel consist of lengthening the forcing cone, back-boring the barrel, and adding compensating ports. " |
Really!!!! My memory is failing me. Man, I hate getting old! ETA: Sorry, but I forgot to look up the shotshell question last night after I got home. |

Hi guys. It's me again. Okay, I remembered last night to check into my "ABCs of Reloading" and also the Speer "#13 Reloading Manual" both of which have very good articles about shotshells for pistols (revolvers & semi-autos). Both articles discussed quite a number of esoteric details about shotshells in pistols, but nothing was mentioned in either source about porting, so I would conclude that it's a non-issue. Interesting factoids which I gleaned while reading: .38 Special is about the smallest recommended caliber for a useful pistol shotshell, .44 Magnum and .45 ACP and .45 Colt make much better loads, there are loadings for 9mm! Maximum useful range in the medium calibers is around 10 feet. The .44s and .45s will get you out to 25 feet. The largest recommended shot size is #7 1/2 with #9 yielding the most potent loads (.45cal.) with some surprisingly good pattern density out to 25 feet. #9 shot can be loaded to penetrate approx. 1/2" of pine board at 25 feet which is more than adequate to wipe out almost any small critter up to the size of a rabbit. There are shotshell "capsules" made of plastic (Speer) which are filled and plugged with a plastic wad and then seated into a charged casing just like a regular bullet in reloading and then there are also designs calling for a shotgun shell type folding crimp. |
